So happy with the initial reception to this wine. After 95 points, now we have Stephen McConnell with another glowing review. This wine will be released on Nov 5th with the Fall Release.

Once upon a time there was a syrah. And the syrah lived in a harsh world. Where ripeness and concentration were not valued, but dirty fruit and ridiculous structure were kingpins. And the syrah was happy. Where an eviscerating to***co nose brought rainy cafe aluminum ashtrays to a point with bread and cheese and olive plates slightly under the drip line of the awning. And the syrah said, “This is good. This is why we are here.” This wine will make you rethink everything you’ve considered normal about the variety, while digging up comparisons to Hermitage and Barossa and Mendocino and at the same time Saxum, Ledge and Manfred Krankl. Structurally proficient, sharp berry on 11, ripe beyond its stated 14-5, a more brilliant rendition of the grape I have not seen since young Qupé “the good stuff” or infantile Yorkville Highlands or Penfold’s old vine mourvedre. It’s not unbalanced, though it pulls intelligence from disparate arenas to coagulate into Syrah situations I am nearly speechless to describe. This is a wine you need to drink in 20 years. I know that sounds depressing and no one will do it, but I’m here to call it. Lavish in all the right places, etchingly stupid in all the right places, and tannic pillars in all the right places. Buy 2 cases. Drink one a year.

10 years is a long time in anyone’s life. Long enough, in my opinion, for almost anyone to say, “I am a different person than I was 10 years ago.” I know I can say that. I know I’m a different person than I was in 2015 when I started Nabor Wines. Which was the original name before being changed to Dusty Nabor Wines the very next vintage. I live in a different house, make wine in a different building, a different region and have two beautiful cats that now command 98% of my attention. Karin has really been the only constant. The foundation on which everything I try and create rests upon.

My winemaking has also evolved massively over the last decade. I’m much more focused and relaxed. Having a semblance of understanding that can help keep the emotional rollercoaster in check. I suppose you’d call that more confidence. Although in “wine”, 10 years is still the “new guy”. Having said that, I do feel my direction has been defined and I’m on the path I was always meant to be on. I know what I’m trying to achieve and while that might seem obvious, in wine; it’s not always. There are always external forces pulling you away from your vision.

Tonight I decided to open that first vintage. 2015, where I made two barrels of one wine. Cabernet Sauvignon from the Bentley Block at Sculpterra in Paso Robles. All those memories of that first vintage came flooding back when I smelled and tasted the wine. All encapsulated in unique but familiar aromas and flavors. Wine really is a time capsule. A lovely reminder of where we’ve been…and how we’ve changed.

Funny thing is, this 2022 is my current vintage. Still have 2023 and 2024 behind it. Because it’s just not a popular variety. Even though I love it, I’m not making it in 2025. Just too much of an effort to convince people to buy it. And me being the worst salesmen in history, is not a good combo.

Had to open another Viognier just because... Far more tropical in the nose, the banana riper and the apple much less tart. Petrichor and slight petrol commands the bouquet, coupled with glassine richness and elegance. Rich and vibrant on uptake, shards of citrus folding gracefully before thick ripeness where walnut shell and toasted almond perfect themselves down onto cellar-floor wetness and acidity with a relative lack of tannin. Sharp bite and buttery charm the finishing touches. Significantly *un-green* despite the published ABV. This wine will give Condrieu lovers the shivers.

I’ve yet to make a general Appelation Pinot Noir under the Dusty Nabor Wines label. They are always single vineyards by contrast. But there is a first time for everything. And for those in the back wondering “What’s the pedigree of this wine”…you need only look at the barrels it came from…..
