Radishes are one of the fastest and most rewarding crops you can grow, making them a perfect choice for September planting in the Pacific Northwest.

These crisp root vegetables thrive in the cool temperatures of fall and can be ready to harvest in as little as three to four weeks. For the best results, sow seeds directly in the soil about half an inch deep and one inch apart, keeping the soil consistently moist. Radishes do not like hot weather, so our cooler autumn days are ideal for producing tender, flavorful roots.

There are many varieties to explore, from the classic red globe to French breakfast and daikon. Successive sowings every week or two can provide a steady supply until the first hard frost. In the PNW, planting radishes in early September means you can enjoy them well into October. For overwintering, some larger varieties like daikon can be planted and left in the ground under a layer of mulch for later harvest.

In the kitchen, radishes add both crunch and spice. They are delicious sliced raw into salads, layered on buttered bread with a sprinkle of salt, or pickled for a tangy kick. Roasting or sautéing brings out their natural sweetness, creating a surprising depth of flavor. Radish greens are also edible and can be used in pesto, soups, or sautéed like other leafy greens. With their quick growth, versatility, and bright flavor, radishes are a small but mighty addition to the fall table.
