Kinda Sorta Farm-ish

Made some rhubarb syrup today (my first time making anything with rhubarb!) and picked our first potatoes! I accidentally pulled a small red onion and a tiny garlic while weeding so I figured that I might as well pull some teeny carrots so we could have roasted potatoes and carrots for supper. 🤷‍♀️

Some of the lettuce in our front garden apparently went to seed last year because we have a small field of lettuce growing in our yard this year. 🤣 Harvested some yesterday, along with some parsley and wild garlic.

A lot has changed since my last post on this page! We moved from our acreage in the country to a home in town with around a half acre yard. Originally a farm house built in the early 1900s, parcels were sold off over the years and newer homes were built around it. Last year consisted of a lot of trial and error with our gardens, especially with the dry, hot weather we had. But, we also discovered amazing plants already well-established on the property, including black raspberries and mulberries!

Recently, we planted our cool-weather crops, including Brussels sprouts ~ a new one for us! Strawberries are blooming and herbs are coming up. Looking forward to a successful garden this year and {hopefully} chickens later this year.

Current farm happenings...

🐣Baby chicks!! Seven ‘barnyard mix’ standard size chicks and four (so far) Serama/Sebright bantam chicks that we were able to sneak under our Orpington hen, ‘Rosebelle’.

🌿Oregano is ready to go! Let us know if you want some!

🥚The egg situation has been pretty dismal around here as the hens have decided they want to lay anywhere else EXCEPT in the coop so it looks like we’ll have to lock them up for a few days in their run so they get in the habit of laying in the coop again.

Received a box full of Flock Party goodies for the chickens today!! Lots of amazing snacks for them to try out. Started with the snack cake today and they loved it...after they investigated it for a couple minutes, of course! Even had a couple guineas come in for a taste.

The cold morning was not agreeing with these two bantams so they came in the house to warm up.
