Hey everyone we open this weekend and we want to let you know of a change that we have to make per the health dept.

Our current self serve setup does not meet their requirements as is. We are ordering parts to make the changes needed to comply.

So, for the first couple weekends our staff will have to pour your samples and fill your containers for you.

This may lead to longer wait times so please be patient we will go as fast as we can for you all.

Everything else is still the same! You can still bring your clean, food grade, sealable containers and save.

03/30/2022

Greetings all, it is with a heavy heart to share with you that our grandfather James Earl Bird the founder of J. Bird Wines and creator of the mead that you all love has passed away.

Jim was born in 1939 in Minneapolis and was raised here. Jim worked for the Minnesota DOT until he retired in 2001. While working a full-time job he had the hobby of making wines which he turned in to a business in 1984. In a small former mechanics shop he converted to a winery in Hanover, Jim began to work on different types of wines and champagnes. Calling it a hobby gone horribly wrong Jim would slowly supply stores but came to find that it was too much to sustain both the winery and a full time DOT career. Luckily enough while being part of the Purple Foot Wine Club Jim and his friends would attend the Minnesota Renaissance Festival. While attended the festival they approached Jim to make a mead for them and Jim said yes. Suppling the festival became the only thing that would sustain the winery for decades. In 1992 Jim moved the winery to its current locating in Stanchfield. For 36 years now we have supplied the festival.

Jim had met many people and made many friends over the years. He absolutely loved to see everyone that enjoyed the products he made and loved to share his knowledge.

Jim did not wish to have any services for himself after passing. We may plan on something during this years Minnesota Renaissance Festival but are unsure.

In recent years with the help of myself (Matthew) and Jessie we have began to expand the business more and more. Jim had told us how proud he is to see J. Bird Wines start to succeed and sore.

While we still mourn for Jim, we know that he would want us to keep growing.

We are planning on opening for our 2022 Spring Sales in April or May depending how the ground thaws. If it happens quickly and the ground is dry enough, we will open the first well in April if not it will be the first weekend in May.

As I am sitting here at my computer on X-Mas Eve doing some reports for the winery it occurs to me that I am acting like Ebenezer Scrooge doing work. Realizing this, I think about how important this company means to Jess and I. How the winery gives us the freedom to work together and to work for ourselves. That leads me to think how important every single one of our customers truly means to making this all possible.

If it wasn’t for all of you, none of this would be a thing. All the people we’ve met and the friends and connections that have been made. It means the world to us that you all have and continue to support this business.

Jess and I want to once again express the udder appreciation and gratitude we have too all of you. Thank You! From the bottom of our hearts.

We will continue to supply you with Minnesota’s Legendary Mead! As well we will grow the business as best as possible so we can reach even more customers. We hope you have a great holiday and end of year. We will see you in the spring when you have to fulfill your need for mead. Sincerely Jess and Matthew.
