Most people know it by its trade name:
It's one of the most common tools used during the final weeks before a showโbut a key part of using any feed tool is understanding ๐ธ๐ฉ๐ข๐ต ๐ช๐ต ๐ช๐ด ๐ข๐ค๐ต๐ถ๐ข๐ญ๐ญ๐บ ๐ฅ๐ฐ๐ช๐ฏ๐จ.
Unlike the nutrients we've discussed in previous posts, ractopamine doesn't add anything to the diet. Instead, it changes how a pig uses the nutrients it's already consuming.

Rather than depositing as much fat, more nutrients are directed toward building lean muscle tissue. The result can be increased muscle expression, improved feed efficiency, and a leaner, heavier-muscled appearance. In many pigs, that translates to more shape over the top, a bolder shoulder, and the appearance of more spread through the chest floor as muscle develops around the skeleton.

Unlike an electrolyte/fill protocol, ractopamine is not a "show day" product.
While the drug is absorbed quickly, the changes you're looking for take time. Research shows ๐ฝ๐ถ๐ด๐ ๐ฏ๐ฒ๐ด๐ถ๐ป ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐๐ฝ๐ผ๐ป๐ฑ๐ถ๐ป๐ด ๐๐ถ๐๐ต๐ถ๐ป ๐๐ต๐ฒ ๐ณ๐ถ๐ฟ๐๐ ๐๐ฒ๐๐ฒ๐ป ๐ฑ๐ฎ๐๐, with much of the improvement in feed efficiency and lean tissue accretion occurring during the first two weeks of feeding. As feeding continues, the biological response gradually diminishes.
That early response may help explain why some showpig feeders have experimented with ๐ฝ๐๐น๐๐ฒ ๐ณ๐ฒ๐ฒ๐ฑ๐ถ๐ป๐ด ractopamineโfor example, feeding it for one week, taking a week off, and then feeding it again later.
This strategy has not been formally studied in showpigs, so we don't know whether it is superior to continuous feeding. However, many feeders believe it allows them to capture that strong early response while giving the pig's feet and body an opportunity to recover before beginning another feeding period.
Whether that theory proves correct remains to be determined, but it highlights an important point:
Commercial research is designed to maximize lean gain and feed efficiency. Showpig feeders are trying to optimize muscle shape, freshness, structural soundness, and ring presence on one specific day.

Commercial research has demonstrated excellent improvements in lean growth and feed efficiency at ๐ฐ.๐ฑโ๐ต ๐ด๐ฟ๐ฎ๐บ๐ ๐ฝ๐ฒ๐ฟ ๐๐ผ๐ป, which remains the approved feeding range.
Within the showpig industry, some feeders have experimented with different feeding strategiesโand sometimes much higher inclusion ratesโin an effort to maximize muscle expression. Those programs have not been rigorously studied, so we don't yet know where additional benefits plateau or where unnecessary risk begins.
One area where higher doses have consistently raised concern is handling.
Researchers found pigs receiving higher levels of ractopamine were often These concerns became much more apparent at 20 ppm, which was once an approved feeding level.
As a result of those studies and field observations, the approved U.S. feeding range was narrowed to 5โ10 ppm (4.5โ9 grams per ton).
One of the most common concerns surrounding ractopamine is soundness.
Interestingly, current research ๐ต๐ฎ๐ ๐ป๐ผ๐ ๐๐ต๐ผ๐๐ป ๐๐ต๐ฎ๐ ๐ฟ๐ฎ๐ฐ๐๐ผ๐ฝ๐ฎ๐บ๐ถ๐ป๐ฒ ๐ฑ๐ถ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐ฐ๐๐น๐ ๐ฑ๐ฎ๐บ๐ฎ๐ด๐ฒ๐ ๐ท๐ผ๐ถ๐ป๐ ๐ฐ๐ฎ๐ฟ๐๐ถ๐น๐ฎ๐ด๐ฒ or causes arthritis-like changes when fed at approved levels.

Studies have reported more hoof lesionsโincluding toe cracks, wall splits, and bruisingโin pigs fed ractopamine, even though those pigs were not necessarily more lame during the research.
Researchers don't yet know exactly why. It may reflect increased mechanical loading as pigs rapidly add lean muscle, changes in hoof horn quality, or a combination of both.
For showpigs, those hoof lesions matter.
A pig doesn't have to be clinically lame for a toe crack to affect how it moves in the show ring. Painful hoof lesions can shorten stride, reduce comfort, increase the risk of infection, and ultimately affect ring presence.
In my own decision-making, hoof quality and structural soundness are two of the biggest factors I consider before deciding whetherโand how aggressivelyโto use ractopamine.
I'm generally more cautious using ractopamine in pigs that are:
Already extremely muscular.
Heavy weight .
Structurally unsound or poor-moving.
Developing hoof cracks or sore feet.
Too hard or lacking body condition.
Too often we ask, "What can Paylean do for this pig?"
A better question is:
Ractopamine doesn't create muscle out of thin air.
To work well, pigs still need:
Adequate protein.
Adequate lysine.
Enough energy intake.
Good health.
Consistent feed intake.
Without those building blocks, there is very little for ractopamine to redirect toward muscle growth.
Like any management tool, It's simply a tool. Success isn't about whether you use itโit's about using it on the right pig, at the right time, at the right dose, while supporting it with adequate protein, lysine, and overall nutrition.
In a future post, we'll discuss one of the most overlooked pieces of a successful ractopamine program: why lysine requirements increaseโand why nutrition, not just the product itself, ultimately determines how much response you'll see.
