Did you know this?

I've raised chickens for alot of years. I always assumed the oyster shell (soluble calcium carbonate) was sufficient to act as a grit source. Well, it's NOT!

Recently, I noticed undigested grains in my chicken poo. I really pay attention to my girls poo. Poo gives you the first indication of potential problems.

So, I started reading and researching and reaching out to the family vet. Seems oyster shell actually dissolves as it passes into the chickens digestive tract (including the gizzard and crop).

To digest food properly, chickens need hard insoluble rock with jagged edges to grind and break down the grain/feed they eat.

So now, just a little bit more informed and intelligent, I give my girls both grower/developer grit mixed into their oyster shell. Since they are two different colors, it makes it easy to see if one or the other needs replenishing.

Movin them out.

At 15 days old, the chicks were having a tough time in the barn. The barn temp was hitting 100 degrees. It's early, but we made the decision to move them outside. We did end up leaving them out through the night and they did just fine.

Zebbo climbed up on top of the coop, and in the pitch black dark as I was closing the babies up, she refused to come down and go in the garage for the night. Took me 15 minutes and a broomstick to get her down. Those were HER babies and she wasn't going to leave them.

What do we do with all the unpurchased, but ripe, produce?

Well, we freeze dry it and add it to our food bank. Here, we are freeze drying 7 canteloupe and 2 pints of Marzano tomatoes. The canteloupe will be firm but crunchy, and the tomatoes (which we thin sliced and salted/peppered) will make snacking chips.

I have one order of honeycrisp apples to do for a customer next, but then we will do butternut squash, which we will powder so we can reconstitute into a mash later (like instant mashed potatoes, but squash). After that, more onions and green peppers.

UPDATE: wry neck chick and Mrs. Ruby

It was not wry neck. It appears it is a genetic anomaly or an injury sustained in shipping. The chick was returned to the brooder to be with her siblings. She can hold her neck up and eat and drink from the feeders. She runs and flaps her wings, and beats up any other chick that bothers her. Because I spent so much time hand feeding, she ran right to me this morning when I opened the brooder and begged to be held. We will continue to monitor her in the brooder.

Mrs. Ruby's milk line filled more since the last post. However, her ni***es are no longer swollen. There have been no other signs of pregnancy. So, thankfully, we will chalk this up as a false pregnancy.
