Haven’t been blessed with a bloom this heavy in several weeks.
Hubby says it’s good thing the incubators are put up and I have to tell myself we don’t need baby birds in the winter 🫣

Over 4 years into this and I’m still blown away by how far we’ve came on egg color. Check out that Terracotta bloom!

If you need me, I’ll be in the barn researching and chasing that rainbow 🄚

5 Things You Probably Didn’t Know About Guinea Fowl

If you’ve ever been around guineas, you already know they’re… well, different. They’re loud, nosy, always on the move, and somehow manage to make themselves the center of attention.

But there’s actually a lot to love about these goofy armadillo chickens!

1. They’re bug-eating machines.
Guineas love bugs and spend a good part of their day wandering around looking for them. Ticks, grasshoppers, beetles… if it crawls, they’re probably interested.

2. They are LOUD.
There is no such thing as a quiet guinea. If something catches their attention, the whole flock may have an opinion about it. And they’re not shy about sharing that opinion.

3. They make pretty good little alarm systems.
Guineas are constantly watching what’s going on around them. A new person, animal, vehicle, or something they don’t recognize can have the whole flock sounding off.

4. They like to stay together.
Guineas are flock birds. Where one goes, you can usually expect the rest to follow. Watching a whole flock march across the farm together is honestly one of my favorite things.

5. They have A LOT of personality.
They may not be the cuddliest birds on the farm, but they sure are entertaining. They’re curious, independent, a little chaotic, and somehow always into something.

And honestly… that’s why we love having them around.

They might be noisy, slightly ridiculous, and occasionally make us wonder what they’re yelling about—but they’re part of what makes farm life so much fun.

Who else has guineas? What would you add to the list?

There’s a lot of talk about the animals that make the farm special—the chickens, ducks, turkeys, pigs, and all the babies—but today, we’re giving some love to a few of the unsung heroes; our cats. 🐈

Our farm cats have a job that may not always get noticed, but it’s an incredibly important one. They help keep our barns, buildings, feed, and animal areas protected from mice and other unwanted critters. They patrol, they hunt, they watch… and occasionally they take a very serious nap in the middle of their shift.

And then there’s Patches.

At 15 years old, Patches has more than earned the right to slow down. He’s been part of farm life for years, doing his job and giving us plenty of companionship along the way. These days, he’s letting us know that he’d much rather enjoy his retirement than continue working full-time. And honestly, we can’t blame him. He’s earned it.

So, as Patches starts settling into his well-deserved retirement, we decided it was time to bring in some younger help.

We added ā€œnew patchesā€ and two of her babies to the crew last week.

They’re learning the ropes, growing into their new surroundings, and eventually they’ll help carry on the job that Ol’ Patches has done so well for so many years.

It’s funny how something as simple as a farm cat can become so much more than an animal that catches mice. They become part of the rhythm of the farm. They’re there while we feed, clean, build, fix, worry, laugh, and work our way through the never-ending list that comes with farm life.

We’re incredibly grateful for Patches and all the years he’s given us, and we’re just as grateful to have a new generation stepping in behind him.

Here’s to a peaceful retirement for our old boy and a long, happy farm life for the new crew.

Every animal here has a purpose, but some leave paw prints on your heart that go far beyond their job description.

Farm life isn’t always the pretty pictures, cute babies, fresh eggs, and happy moments you see on Facebook. Sometimes, farm life really, really hurts.

We lost Shrek — our emu, our bestest boy, and a huge part of our farm sometime yesterday afternoon.
Losing an animal you’ve poured time, love, money, and so much of yourself into is a kind of heartbreak that’s hard to explain unless you’ve lived it.

There have been moments lately where I’ve honestly wondered if it’s time to give it all up. The early mornings, the late nights, the expenses, the constant work, and then having to say goodbye to animals we have so much invested in… sometimes it feels like more than I can handle.

But then I remember why we started this crazy adventure. Why we keep going. Why we love this crazy farm so much.

And if I’m being completely honest, it’s difficult to know if I’m truly making the right decision. Life has taught me, especially through losing so many important people, that anything can happen. You truly never know what’s waiting around the corner or what tomorrow will bring.

Just 60 days ago, I was ready to load everything up and take it all to the sale. I even posted Shrek and Fiona both UFD. After some really hard conversations and realizing that losing my sister was causing me to make some very rash decisions, I decided to give myself more time. More time to grieve. More time to think. More time to figure out what I actually wanted.

And here I am again, grieving another loss and questioning everything.

So, for now, I’m going to keep choosing to put one foot in front of the other. I’m going to add Shrek to my long list of things I’m grieving, carry his memory with us, and keep working on remembering my ā€œwhy.ā€

Maybe I don’t have to have everything figured out right now. Maybe I just have to keep going.

Farm life is beautiful, but it can also be brutal. And sometimes, ā€œstill goingā€ is the biggest accomplishment of all.

We are incredibly grateful for the opportunity to partner with HCC Network and provide farm-fresh eggs for their program.

As a small, locally owned farm, partnerships like this are especially meaningful to us. We take great pride in providing fresh, quality products while supporting the needs of our surrounding communities.

Every purchase and partnership helps support our small farm and allows us to continue caring for our animals, growing our operation, and bringing locally produced food to the families and organizations we serve.

We sincerely appreciate HCC Network for choosing NAW Farms and look forward to being a part of this program. We are proud to support the important work they do within the community.

Thank you to everyone who continues to support our small farm—it truly makes a difference. šŸ”šŸ„ššŸŒ±
