Wart a difference a week can make!
….
Did you know that warts are a viral disease that don’t usually cross species? Lucky us, especially after working this group of heifers last weekend to remove some gnarly warts off of some of their ears. There are also different types of warts depend on where they’re found on different parts of their bodies.
Types 1, 2 and 3 are usually the ones we see most, around the neck and head area, in this case, the ears.
Warts can spread by contact, and they can spread from one another. Once we noticed that more were showing up, we ran them through the chute, checking all their ears and removing any warts we found and spraying them down with wound kote to keep things clean and healing well.
You usually see warts in calves as yearlings or younger, adults not so much because as they age, their bodies develop immunity towards the viruses that cause them. There usually isn’t any issue or harm in the warts as long as they aren’t in sensitive areas, but they can be quite unsightly.
There’s a debate if you leave the warts to grow some and then remove or try to scrape them off at first sight. Either way, we experienced some of both, so we’ll see firsthand which turns out to be more true!
Bless her heart, N10 had the worst case of the warts, but look at that improvement and healing just this week!
