Wine harvest is a season of intense activity and anticipation for winemakers everywhere, but El Dorado's version runs a little differently. Our high elevation means harvest typically starts later than other wine regions.

Cooler temperatures at altitude slow ripening and extend the growing season, giving grapes more time to develop complex flavor. It's a big part of what makes El Dorado wines taste the way they do.

September means back-to-school for some, harvest for us, and for the whole state — California Wine Month.

It's our chance to celebrate the winemakers, winegrowers, and wine lovers who make California the #1 wine producer in the country, and #4 in the world.

El Dorado is one of 49 California counties that grow wine grapes (and one of the few growing above 2,500 feet!).

This month, our wineries are marking the occasion with tastings, tours, and events all September long.

Today is International Cabernet Sauvignon Day, celebrating the world's most planted wine grape, which also happens to grow beautifully right here in El Dorado County.

(Bonus: it's National Red Wine Day too, so consider this your sign to pour a glass.)

Three things worth knowing about Cab:
🍇 It's a relatively young variety. The first documented references date back to the 17th century.
🍇 It's a natural cross between Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc.
🍇 It's remarkably adaptable, producing distinct wines everywhere from cool-climate Bordeaux to the warmer slopes of El Dorado County
