We bake a lot of cookies. Guess what the number one seller is? If you think it is a Chocolatey Ooey Gooey confection, you would be mistaken. Truth be told, our best seller is the Oatmeal Cherry Raisin. We brown the butter, soak the dried fruit to get them plump and sassy, and use real butter and free range eggs. Taste one and you will feel like grandma just hugged you. We don’t pop them in the oven if they don’t weigh at least 9 ounces. That is a heck of a hug. Order today!

I had a history teacher who gave the class an assignment to envision our lives 50 years into the future. My essay contemplated that I would be a fat grandma living on a farm and baking cookies. I was a child of the suburbs who watched The Partridge Family and Leave it to Beaver. I knew nothing about farms and had never seen a cow before so this prognostication from my 12 year old self was a bit of a mystery. I have no idea where that imagery even came from, but here I am, 52 years later, living my cookie baking farm life. P.S. Please say hello to Milkshake, the latest addition to the milking team. She is a Jersey Holstein cross due to Calf this winter. She is as sweet as sugar and we are smitten. Our Dairy Herd share is always short on milk so finding a pregnant young dairy cow in our area was a dream come true!

Let’s play ‘Best, Worst, Funniest’ moment of my day. First….Zinnias are still popping and Celosia is coming on strong. My Green Lynx Spider produced her egg sac and is protecting it like a mother should. I was nervous taking the pic, but she seems to have gotten used to me and didn’t attack. Score one for the old lady farmer. I cut lots of zinnias and celosia to sparkle in my kitchen window and will save the seeds they produce for next year’s garden. Second, we have been gifted with a surprise chicken egg laid in the farm delivery van every day this past week. The Farmer hears a chicken clucking while running errands but can never find her. I found her this morning. She had pooped on the dashboard and it appears that she is full on squatting. We might need to engage an attorney. Finally, the Farmer emerged this morning in his eclectic, late onset old man attire, and asked “what is wrong with you that makes you look at me and say…. I want me some of that?” Oh my Lord. God is good and this life is sweet perfection. What is YOUR Best, Worst, Funniest?

Reason #978 why you should support your local farmer: we keep families together! We respect the needs of babies and their moms! We do not separate families…we “Milk Share” instead! There is always enough milk for everyone. Baby is fat and happy, and Mama Cow and Farmer are equally delighted with the arrangement.
My kitchen window affords me a great view of our Eastern pasture. Today I saw something totally ridiculous. 12 year old Reba is an amazing Mom. We didn’t breed her last year so her ‘baby,’ Lizzie Lou, is now 2 1/2 years old. Lizzie is the mother of a bull calf named Theo. I saw my first Milk-a-Thon…Theo nursing on Lizzie, with Lizzie nursing on Reba, who was content to graze and nurture her family. Farm animals have complex inter-generational relationships. Small family farmers support those relationships. Support your small family farmer! Interested in our dairy herd share? Reach out to schedule a farm visit!

Birds of a Feather or the Last Straw? You can take the girl off the farm, but you can’t take the farm off the girl. I went to the chiropractor today and this is what I left behind! Oy. I have a very kind, and amazingly competent, chiropractor!
