I think there's some law that says if you cover your plants, it won't frost.. but if you don't cover them, it will. Sooo, you're welcome fellow gardeners of Canaan, Maine 😘. 5/30/26

I'm a little overwhelmed and supposed to be on a low stress diet, so can you guys do me a favor? Instead of me sending out countless individual DMs, can you please message me with a date and time to pick up your seedling and devil's lettuce plants? It would help me so much to have a schedule. Most everything worked out, but I'm short on a couple things so I'll do my very best to get you as close to your full order as I can. I can't tell you how much I appreciate all your well wishes. I've gone thru and read them all multiple times to help put some spring back into my step. 💚

It has taken me a few days to talk about this. On my way back from a wonderful mother's day visit in Massachusetts with my beloved family, I had a medical emergency while on the highway. Radar predicted it. He started pawing at me and suddenly my nervous system went haywire. My heart rate went thru the roof, my eyes were darting all around unable to focus on anything. My hands went numb to the elbows, my feet turned to ice blocks and the rest of my body went white hot. I was starting to pass out, but my guardian angels must've grabbed the wheel because I made it off the Rowley, MA exit to the first driveway I saw. It was a place called Muddy Creek Animal Care Center.
I stumbled thru their door shaking uncontrollably and simply declared I NEED HELP. The girls at the clinic didn't bat an eye, they just took control of the situation and got me the help I needed. Two lovely ladies in particular, Ana and Liv, showed me such kindness and compassion that I felt compelled to write this despite rarely revealing anything about my private life outside the farm.. because such good deeds should be shared and revered. I would shout my thank yous to them from a mountain top if I could, but alas, I have a whole farm to plant.. so I'm shouting it here💓 THANK YOU 💓 ♾️

Most people would say "they renewed my faith in the goodness of humanity", but honestly, I have NEVER lost my faith in the goodness of humanity. Turn off the news and look around you. There are wonderful people in every corner of this earth and I was so lucky to have fallen in the care of these two that day. They took such good care of Radar and I, and even drove us 40 minutes to my in-laws house where I could recover in the care of my amazing brother-in-law, Kevin, to whom I am also so grateful. Mattie worked on the phone with Ana and Liv to arrange the whole thing from afar. I can't imagine how stressful this was for him and am so thankful for him and to be back home in his care.

So, I'm still here (yay!), and trying not to fixate on whatever it was that happened to me. I wish there was something I could do to ensure it never happens again. I'm hoping that writing it out and acknowledging it will help, rather than burying it in the back of my psyche to haunt me at a later time. I am a bit PTSD'd and very spiritually introspective after all this, so when you see me for all your seedling pickups in the next two weeks and I seem "odd".. this is why. (Well, odder than my usual odd 😆). Advice welcome if any professionals happen to stumble upon this.
Love to you all. Pay forward the kindness you've been shown and always take good care of each other. God is good! 🥹

Update: Doogie and one of his sons have sold. I have 1 jake left for sale. Will change this status when he's gone. Thanks!
Ready to part with two pure bourbon red jakes (8 months old) and possibly their dad, Doogie (2.5 years old) to the perfect home. Doogie is the friendliest boy and has been our head breeder, but he has too many daughters in the breeding flock now so we're switching bloodlines to maintain genetic diversity. They are all coop trained and free range wonderfully. Their tail fans are a little beat up from the hectic mating season, but they promise to look spectacular again after their fall molt! Figured I'd offer them to our immediate community here first before I post them in the poultry groups. 🦃

Wait for it..
... did morning barn chores, followed by a 1.5 mile walk in the woods, followed by an hour of chuck it ball in the fields, followed by raw chicken neck treat, followed by snuggles, followed by another barn check, followed by "tricks" (training sesh where he goes thru his massive repertoire 3x).. many treats given.
Mum sits down for the first time all morning..
Radar: Ahhh NOPE
Mum stands up..
Radar: LFG!!!

6 week old onions and 3.5 week old brassicas ready for the ground as soon as we can work plots #4 and #8. I'm getting a lot of seedling problem questions in my inbox. I have no tricks, guys. It's the dirt. Fort Vee from Vermont Compost has never once let me down. No fertilizer, no bump ups. From seed to ground in half the time. Of course lights help too. A sunny window will result in leggy starts, whereas proper lighting prevents stretching. Wanna know a secret? We don't even use "grow lights". We have shop LEDs with a daylight spectrum. They're so cheap and work so well. I'll link the exact ones we use in the comments.
Also, Nacho Kitten guarding the alliums. Love this little lion 🦁, eternally grateful to the stray cat distribution system for this guy 💛.
