When you go to Mt Hope alternative animal auction, just never know what's coming home with ya!
Word of caution to those going to auctions with chickens...don't buy them! Disease risk is too great and not worth any "bargain" you might discover.
However, I did come home with an addition to our goat herd and possibly the greatest challenge of my egg hatching career, emu eggs! No telling if they're fertile or likely to hatch, but the price was worth a roll of the dice...

So, when you finally get fed up with an array of tabletop incubators you've been fighting for years....
You quit screwing around and splurge on a real piece of equipment!
Say hello to my new little friend! Stoked to be giving this thing a solid test run. No more constantly screwing with temps and humidity on these tabletop units. Fully automated is the future of this operation!

Marans, egg color, pricing, and availability...an explanation.
No breeder can guarantee all their birds offspring will be super dark layers.

An ultra dark laying hen under the same rooster can through the season, produce 80 or more young hens that will lay across the spectrum. Half or less will lay as dark or darker than their mothers. The other half or less will lay dark, but not quite like their mother and another handful will lay much lighter shades. It's a crapshoot at best, but narrowing down the best genetics to carry forward is my end goal to hopefully, one day bring a little more consistency.
Marans are not consistent layers, decent at best giving on average 150-200 eggs per year. The darker a hen lays, the less eggs you'll receive, and the lighter one lays, the more eggs you'll get. Eggs moving through a hen more slowly receive more coating and vice versa.

I am only hatching from 7 hens currently whom are deemed good quality in terms of their conformation to the breed and in egg color. On good days, I get 5-6 eggs, on others maybe 2-3, so it can be tough to predict what is coming. I will be dramatically increasing this number for next year hopefully, expecting that my breeding efforts will yield consistently better birds this season, and allow me to keep a higher percentage of my growouts.

Why are hatching eggs, chicks and pullets so expensive?
First off, I have invested heavily in my parent stock, thousands of dollars literally. Secondly, I grow out and feed a ton of birds each year, only to keep a few of the best to go forward with. And lastly, as mentioned above, I get a limited opportunity by way of eggs produced to get a return on these investments. So when I charge what I do, you're getting a bargain off of the back of my hard work and prior financial investments. Believe me, I've paid MUCH more for hatching eggs and day old chicks from high end breeders than I could bring myself to charge someone else. I try to stay within reason without just giving them away because they're a breed I think everyone should have a chance to enjoy!

So, this season has begun with a bang! Lots of people contacting me for eggs, chicks, and pullets this past couple of weeks. I've done a little more promoting than in the past. The girls have cooperated fairly well and are giving up lots of eggs and I currently have 5 incubators running to try and meet demand, as well as trying to produce enough growouts for next year's breeder selections. So bear with me and get your orders in. I will do my best to meet my current orders and take on a few more yet. With the new business, it will be tough to focus on the chickens as much as we get into late spring, but I'll do my best. Thanks!

Seeing many new views popping up here since announcing the opening of my new construction company, Aqualife Construction LLC.
For those wondering, I am still in the chicken game! lol
Things have been quiet for a while as I have reduced my flock size and breed selection to focus on improving primarily my marans.
I have some very nice offspring from last year whom I hope will continue the great results in terms of breed standards and egg colors.
Some of the darkest eggs I have ever produced have hit the nest boxes this past couple weeks!
Hatching eggs will be limited in availability until around April, some chicks and started pullets will be available again throughout the coming season.
PM me with any questions or to be added to a wait list.

Well, today begins my first (late) round of hatching! 141 chicken eggs and 70 Japanese Coturnix Quail! These will all be grown out, along with my next hatch to select the best candidates for next year's breeders. In this round are blue/black/Splash Copper Marans, blue/black/splash Ameraucanas, American Bresse, and the first generation of my secret recipe olive eggers. Also included are some porcelain d'uccle which are fun pets and silkies to increase my flock of surrogate mothers.
Time to get a cabinet incubator!😂

Today was a looong but successful day of processing! Roughly 175 birds processed today, mostly pastured Cornish X, but also a good handful of extra roosters/breeding culls. Thanks to Phunny Farm Shawna, Clark, Megan, Tina, Joe, and special thanks to our young chicken wranglers Landon and Kara! lol
Many firsts for all of us today, as much was learned and shared by all.

Update from this past week's progress. I'm actually farther along than I have pictures for. Did a little recycling of metal roofing, nothing a pressure wash and paint cannot fix. Plan is to have it at least move-in-ready by this Sunday. Paint will come later this fall or spring. Ready to get a wrap on this long awaited project!

New (extra) additions to my Black Copper Marans!
Over the past couple years, I have spent thousands of dollars bringing in various Marans genetics from across the country. Unfortunately, most of them were poor/very poor quality. From the original 60 or so Black Coppers I began with, I have culled down to 6 hens and 1 rooster, of which only 2 hens will continue on into next year's breeding. Say what other breeders will about Greenfire Farms, but their French national egg champion line produced the best looking hens and exceptional dark eggs. I went ahead and hemorrhaged more $ to obtain another 8 of this particular line, to add into my other line.

This spring, I obtained the very best looking birds I have laid eyes on, sired by a 2019 grand national champion rooster. The egg color in this line is decent, but not as good as my Greenfire French champions. From these 2 lines, consisting of several breeding groups, I am working to create a gorgeous show quality line that will also blow away competition for egg color. These genetics will also enter my blue and splash copper pens....Stay tuned in the years ahead!
