When people think about tree health, they might picture green leaves and strong branches, but some of the most important work is happening underground, especially around the roots.

Spring planting is happening now and many are wondering how to help trees establish and build strong root systems. Mycorrhizal fungi form a natural relationship with tree roots and help trees access water and nutrients more efficiently.

This can be exceptionally important in urban landscape!

While no amendment replaces starting with strong, healthy trees in the first place, mycorrhizal fungi can help.

Healthy soil is actually full of biological activity, including mycorrhizal fungi, which helps keep root systems healthy, but should you add it to soil?

Planting a tree is exciting. Keeping it alive afterward? That’s where things get interesting.

One of two things usually happens with young trees:
1. They get neglected to death
2. Or they get loved to death

Too little water, too much water, mulch volcanoes, overfertilizing, staking mistakes…good intentions can sometimes create big problems for newly planted trees.

The good news is that successful tree establishment doesn’t have to be complicated. Starting with healthy roots, planting properly, and understanding what young trees actually need after planting can make all the difference.

In our newest blog, we cover:
✔️ How often to water newly planted trees
✔️ Proper mulch practices
✔️ When (and when not) to stake a young tree
✔️ Fertilizer mistakes to avoid
✔️ Why healthy roots matter from day one

If you’re planting this season, this guide can help your trees establish stronger, healthier, and more resilient for the long haul.

A few simple consistent practices can help create balance and the conditions for newly planted and young trees to thrive.

When people think about strong, thriving trees, they usually focus on what they can see: full canopies, vibrant leaves, fall color, growth rate, shade, or flowers. But the real story starts below the soil surface.

Healthy roots are the foundation for healthy trees. They help trees establish faster, access water and nutrients more efficiently, withstand drought and stress, and stay more resilient long-term.

That’s one of the reasons we put so much focus on root development at SuperTrees.

Through air pruning and air pot technology, we grow trees with dense, fibrous root systems instead of circling, girdling roots that can create problems later on.

The result? Stronger starts. Better establishment. Healthier trees.

We’re sharing one of our older blogs that takes a deeper look at air pruning, air pots, and why root quality matters more than most people realize.

Tree health starts in the roots. While traditional growing methods don't allow tree roots to develop properly, air pruning can help produce healthy roots.
