Desert Canyon Farm

Desert Canyon Farm Open seasonally for farm-direct retail plant sales during Spring Farm Open Days. Wholesale year-round to independent garden centers and nurseries.

Greetings,

Thank you for visiting the Desert Canyon Farm page. This page is set up to give you a little insight about our farm, and what we do here, the names of Tammi's books, and so forth. That said, the best way to get up-to-the-week information is to visit our website and blog at http://desertcanyonfarm.wordpress.com. Essentially, the Desert Canyon Farm page is going to beco

me more of a bulletin board for notification of “Happenings” on the farm and less of a chatting communication site. Our website and blog will tell you about the latest farm happenings and what is going on in the lives of Chris and Tammi. There is information there about our Open Farm Days each spring, classes and events, and how to buy Tammi's books. Our website and blog are filled with all sorts of information about using plants, including databases on 1800 + varieties of herbs, heritage/heirloom food plants, native plants to the southwestern United States, wildlife-friendly habitat plants and much more. There are recipes, along with directions on how to prepare and use different kinds of herbs. If you are a gardener, or would like to be, you'll find a lot of gardening tips on our website too. Probably, the best and most fun part of the Desert Canyon Farm Green Thoughts website is Tammi's blog. Typically, Tammi posts weekly about whatever is happening around that time. Sometimes blog posts are whimsical, or they could be educational. Sometimes they are about the weekly routine, or Tammi might be sharing thoughts about living an earth-friendly lifestyle. You'll also meet Shrek, Willow, Sadie and Pal on the blog - all of which are part of our domestic 4-legged farm family, plus Hannah and Gretel, the winged members of the farm family. And there are endless amounts of wildlife that live and visit the farm, and we consider them all part of our farm family too! The farm is a member of several entities including:
The Colorado Division of Wildlife's Birding Trail (http://coloradobirdingtrail.com/site/desert-canyon-farm/)
A United Plant Savers Native Medicinal Plant Sanctuary
A National Wildlife Federation Certified Wildlife Habitat
A Xerces Society Pollinator Habitat Site for domestic honeybees and native pollinators and beneficial insects of all kinds. One thing that most likely won't happen on this page is a lot of responses to your messages. Please don't be offended if you don't get a direct message back, as farm life keeps us very busy and there is limited time for us to do computer work when we need to be growing and working with the plants here. This is a small family working farm. We will do our best to answer really critical inquiries, but if you don't hear back, we are just taking care of the farm homeplace. You very well might find the answer to your inquiry among the information on our website too, so we encourage you to check it out. With Green Thoughts,
Chris and Tammi Hartung, owners of Desert Canyon Farm
M'lissa and Luke, Lizz and Jake (our kids)
Kaila, Michael, Nate, Farm Stand Liz, and Stephanie (who are all part of our seasonal Farm Crew Family)

Rabbits don’t need bread, chips, or handouts. Those actually harm them. What does help is letting your yard stay a little wild:
• Keep a small brush pile for shelter 🌿
• Leave some leaf litter on the ground 🍂
• Plant native shrubs for natural cover 🌱
• Drive slowly at dawn and dusk when they’re most active 🚗💡

A “messy” yard to us is a safe home to them. Let nature be nature. 🌾

Many animals people fear or overlook actually protect and support our landscapes.
Opossums reduce ticks.
Bats guard crops.
Coyotes control rodent populations.
Bees and butterflies keep entire food systems standing.

When we see them differently, coexistence becomes possible.

A tidy yard is often a deadly one.
Winter pushes small creatures to the edge of survival, and leaf litter becomes the only insulation they have left.

• Fireflies begin life in the soil and leaf layers — removing them erases next summer’s glow.
• Moths, butterflies, and beneficial beetles overwinter in folded leaves.
• Birds rely on these insects for scarce winter protein.

Leaf litter isn’t clutter.
It’s habitat.
It’s shelter.
It’s life.

If you want a thriving spring, protect the hidden world beneath your feet this winter.
A small act of patience creates an entire generation of wildlife.

Let's all show up and advicate for a massive butterfly garden attraction. It would be great for the property, great for our city, great for tourists, and great for pollinators!!! It would be so so so beautiful and catch the eyes of drivers on highway 50 or those walking or biking on the riverwalk!! It might even generate some revenue as a possibility.

Chris and I and friends are totally on board with making this a choice that the City would choose. If you like the idea, please come to this meeting and speak to it.

Riverfront Initiative: Community Engagement Event #1

The City of Cañon City and their consultant PORT Urbanism will hold the first community engagement event for the Riverfront Initiative project on Tuesday, December 2nd from 5pm to 7pm at the Royal Gorge Chamber Alliance at 816 Royal Gorge Boulevard.

The purpose of the meeting is to seek resident input and ideas for redevelopment of a vital riverfront site at the western gateway to Cañon City – the 22-acre location of the former Black Hills Energy W.N. Clark power plant – and the old Parks Department maintenance building and lot at Centennial Park.

Conceptual display boards will be set up so community members can see the area of the Western Gateway Park and Centennial Park planning zone, learn about the surrounding area and any planning limitations, and discover how this project ties into the broader Picture Cañon City 2040 Comprehensive Plan. Cañon City planning staff and representatives of PORT Urbanism will be on hand to share information and to capture input from city residents on what they would like to see in the future at this prime Arkansas Riverfront location.
