As you can imagine, weeds are a big challenge in organic asparagus production, since asparagus grows in the same spot for up to 15 years.

Over the last 10 years we’ve tried it all — mechanical cultivation, timed flame weeding, endless hand weeding… and sometimes just giving up. 😅

This year we decided to try something new: straw mulch. We laid the straw down in April while the frost was still in the ground. The straw did an amazing job suppressing weeds, but it also insulated the soil and kept the frost from lifting, delaying the asparagus emergence by almost two weeks.

Now the wait is over and asparagus season is in full bloom! The fields are producing heavily and the asparagus is looking beautiful. 💚 🌱

Fresh organic asparagus is available in our farm store, weekend farmers markets, year round CSA and for online ordering. We think it was worth the wait.
