June is “Dairy Month” and June 1st is World Milk Day. But here on farms, every day is milk day! At our farm, our cows graze lush pastures, converting nutrients from grass, into delicious, wholesome milk. There’s nothing better than simply milk that’s been unadulterated, and untouched by human processing. Cheers your glass of raw milk to the wonderful cows and people that help make this food happen! 🥛

Farming is about the circle of life. This afternoon, while everyone is working away, the piglets take a nice afternoon nap. It’s just a precious reminder to enjoy the moments we are given, because time passes by so quickly, especially on the farm!

This is how we raise our meat chickens: on pasture. For those of you who may be wondering when we will get more chicken in the freezer, it will be several weeks! When you try pastured chicken, you’ll never go back to store-bought chicken. The meat has more flavor and has more nutrients.

Cheap, store-bought chickens are raised inside pens inside giant buildings, with no access to the outdoors. Our chickens eat high quality grain, grass/weeds, bugs, and sleep on a carpet of grass. We are thankful for this kind of poultry management, it’s just better, and we feel better about it too.

We frequently receive questions in emails like “what do your cows eat” or “are the cows grass-fed” or even better… “are the cows grass-finished” (which is *not* applicable to dairy cows!) 🤦‍♀️ Here are photos of what our cows eat during grazing season. During the off season, they eat this (except it’s all dried up, pre-cut…called Hay) and also alfalfa, which is delicious dried and fermented! It’s high in protein, too.

Each cow eats about 100 to 120 pounds of grass/forages every day. We don’t want them to be super high producers (so as to relieve milking stress) so we do NOT feed corn, corn silage, or grass silage (fermented grass or fermented corn stalks).

And then when they go into the milking parlor, they receive their treats, which is actually grain (gasp), but this equates to roughly several handfuls (several pounds). It’s not organic grain, but the amount they consume is so so so minimal compared to the 100s of pounds of grass they eat in a day.

We do not spray our fields with any herbicides nor any pesticides, and the land has been historically farmed the old old-fashioned way like this, just like we do today.

As you can see, the pasture also consists of grass and clover and various plants! It’s like a giant salad. 🥗

Other animals on the farm….if you come see us, you might see our one and only doggy, Pixie! While she loves to nap all day in the house, she loves belly rubs in the grass and hugs from friends. 🥰

🌧️Looking for a rainy day project? Make butter, because look at all this cream! If you just want to try making a little bit of butter, simply use a turkey baster to suction the cream directly out of the half gallon. You can put it in a small blender, or even give it to your kid in a jar/container to shake, shake, shake, and see what happens! 🫨

This one reason why we love raw, Jersey milk straight from the cows. Nothing’s been done to the milk other than being mixed and cooled for bottling. It’s not homogenized, so the cream separates, making it easy to use the cream for different recipes or making butter. 🥛

With the cows on new grass (instead of hay), the cream contains more beta-carotene and good stuff that makes the cream quality richer. That’s why if you make your own butter, you’ll find it’s more yellow than many store-bought butters.

This is what they did in the old days, and this is what we do today in our kitchen 👨‍🍳 But note, we do not sell butter or cream separately!

Swipe to see a pic of the butter we made from our cream versus store-bought butter 🧈

Thought this new study was very interesting. Some food for thought, indeed. 🧐

🧐🧐🧐 STUDY - RAW MILK CAN BE A LOW-RISK FOOD WHEN FARMERS ARE TRAINED AND FOLLOW HIGH STANDARDS: Test data show that raw milk being intentionally produced for human consumption is fundamentally different from pre-pasteurized milk that is taken from bulk tanks. It was concluded that "raw milk can be produced with a high level of hygiene and safety.” This paper provides further proof that, with farmer training, careful production practices, and ongoing testing, low-risk raw milk is achievable.

What a busy time of the year! We have had so much happening. Some exciting things include the sunshine and growing grass (of course) —-while many farms might turn out cows onto grass the first time, we do a gradual grazing program where cows graze for a few hours each day until they’re full time (so sorry we don’t have any epic videos of cows prancing in a field!).
Another great thing is that we upgraded to a larger milk tank! Here’s Mavis with the last time bottling with our older tank, and the new one in place right after installment! We had to remove the wall temporarily. So thankful for this well-needed upgrade!

A gorgeous farm sunset from this evening. These two Guernseys, Penelope and Peony are like two peas in a pod, you can definitely tell they're good friends because they hang out with each other a lot. We were thankful for this sun trying to come out this evening!
