FLORIDA WOMAN JAILED AFTER ATTEMPTING TO TRADE A LIVE CHICKEN FOR A PEDICURE AT A NAIL SALON
PORT ST. LUCIE, FL — Mackenzie Caldwell, 30, was arrested Friday morning at the Lavish Nails Spa on St. Lucie West Boulevard after allegedly walking into the salon carrying a live Buff Orpington hen and attempting to use the bird as payment for a full set of acrylics and a pedicure.
According to the police report, Caldwell entered the salon at 10:42 a.m. wearing leggings, mismatched flip-flops, and a Disney World hoodie. She was holding the chicken in a reusable Publix shopping bag and sipping a Sonic Cherry Limeade.
Witnesses say Caldwell walked straight to the front desk, gently lifted the chicken out of the bag onto the counter, and announced she was "officially open to negotiations."
According to the arrest report, Caldwell made the following offers to salon staff:
- The chicken, named "Henrietta," in full trade for a deluxe pedicure with hot stones
- A "package deal" including Henrietta, 4 fresh eggs, and a "personally written poem about the salon"
- A handwritten coupon she had created reading "REDEEM ONE (1) HEN FOR ONE (1) BEAUTY EXPERIENCE"
- A backup offer of "Henrietta plus a pumpkin from my porch" if the salon would also include eyebrow waxing
- A polaroid of Henrietta wearing a tiny pearl necklace, presented as proof she was "a high-class barter item"
Salon owner Linda Nguyen told reporters, "She told me Henrietta laid 'better-than-organic' eggs and had her own Instagram account. She actually pulled up the Instagram. It had 14 followers, all named Caldwell."
Caldwell allegedly grew defensive when the salon refused, informing officers she had "successfully traded a goat for a haircut in 2023" and that the salon was "stuck in old-fashioned currency thinking."
Police say Henrietta remained completely calm throughout the encounter, perched contentedly on a stack of nail polish bottles eating a piece of complimentary biscotti another customer had offered her.
Caldwell was apprehended outside the salon attempting to flag down a DoorDash driver and ask if he would "accept the chicken as a tip."
She faces charges of disorderly conduct, attempted fraud, and improper transport of a live animal.
She is being held on $750 bond.
