Here is our TENTATIVE list of Summer Farm Markets!

This will be our first time bringing our MILK! So bare with us as we navigate how much to make throughout the weeks to be sure to supply everyone.

This weekend we have back to back markets, then we will be attending the Collinsville farmers market every other weekend unless state otherwise.

We hope to see you there!

Note: please email us at [email protected] if you are interested in helping out at the markets! Just a couple hours every other sunday. We are looking for friendly, outgoing, and who has been apart of our journey as a supporter/customer for some time and has a basic understanding of our products and operation! (I had posted a stories in regards to this, but things got lost so please send an email if you feel right for the opportunity!)

June Dairy Month: You asked...

Q: what does is mean if a cow goes into retirement?

A: At 13 years old, Lorinda has officially entered retirement! While cows don't go through menopause the same way humans do, many older cows begin cycling less regularly or stop cycling altogether. This can make it difficult or impossible for them to become pregnant.
A cow needs to have a calf to start a new lactation cycle. If she no longer becomes pregnant, her milk production will naturally come to an end, and she retires from the milking herd.
In Lorinda's case, retirement means lounging out in the field behind the farm stand with the occasional well deserved snack! 🍎🐄❤️

If you want to help us celebrate lorindas retirement, there are some coloring pages on the bulletin board at the farm stand!!

COFFEE MILK RESTOCK!!
Pour over ice and enjoy some refreshing cold brew infused coffee milk!
Not like the sweet type you're used to- this is BOLD and CAFFEINATED!! No syrups or artificial flavors, this is for the ice coffee junkies! 😉

For those of you with an interest in feet... today's your lucky day. 😆

June Dairy Month: You Asked…

Q: Who does your hoof trimming?

A: New England's rocky terrain lol!
We actually don't have a hoof trimmer! Our cows spend most of the year walking on pasture, farm lanes, and plenty of rocky ground. All that walking naturally wears their hooves down, so we typically don't need routine trimming.

On some farms, cows do have their hooves professionally trimmed about once or twice a year, especially if they spend most of their time on softer surfaces where the hooves don't wear down as much naturally.
When a hoof trimmer visits a farm, cows stand in a specialized trimming chute while each hoof is lifted, inspected, and carefully shaped. The goal isn't just to shorten the hoof. It's to make sure the cow's weight is distributed properly and to catch any issues before they become bigger problems.

By the end of winter, when our cows haven't been out grazing for couple months, you can start to notice their hooves getting a little longer. But once they're back out on pasture in the spring, they get their pedicures taken care of thanks to mother nature!
(First photo was taken right before they went out to spring pasture this year. You can see they still arent even that bad!)

🥛June Dairy Month: You Asked...

Q: How does a milking machine work?

A: In this photo, I have the milking machine hooked up to Tango!
That piece hanging underneath her udder is called the claw. The cups attached to the cow contain soft rubber liners called inflations. These inflations gently open and close around the teat in a rhythmic pattern, allowing milk to flow while also giving the teat time to rest between pulses. This action is designed to mimic natural nursing, helping encourage milk letdown without being harsh on the teat.

The milk then travels through the claw and directly into our pipeline system, which carries it to the bulk tank. Because the milk stays in a closed system the whole time, it helps keep everything clean.

In the photo Tango is actually just about done which is why there is not much milk flow going into the claw! At this point, I release the vacuum and remove the unit. We want to make sure she's milked out completely, but we also don't want the machine left on longer than necessary, with a total time of roughly only 4-5 minutes per cow 😊

Time to kick off our June Dairy Month Q&A!!

I got some really awesome questions that I am excited to geek out with those of you who are curious!
I thought I would start off with a cute one today :)

🥛June Dairy Month: You Asked...

Q: Do cows have best friends?

A: Maybe not quite in the way people do, but cows definitely have preferred herd mates!

Cows don't interact equally with every member of the herd. You'll often notice certain cows spending more time together, especially animals that are familiar with one another or have grown up alongside each other.

On our farm, most seem perfectly happy hanging out with whoever happens to be nearby. But there are definitely some pairs that seem to seek each other out!
One example is our twins, Vodka and VerMOOth. Even though there are two stalls separating them in the barn, they always seem to find each other out in the field. However I do call them the "Barnyard Bullies."... They're both perfectly nice cows! But when they're together, they become quite the team. If another cow happens to be standing where they want to be, she'll usually end up moving! 😆So while I can't officially say they're best friends, they're certainly preferred pasture partners!

🥛 JUNE DAIRY MONTH Q&A! 🥛

Thank you so much as I've received so many great questions from all of you for June Dairy Month!

The nice weather has kept us busy so I haven't had a chance to start answering them yet. But beginning this weekend, I'm going to try to post an answer to a different question every day for the rest of the month!

Have a question about the dairy industry? How our farm operates? Life during hay season? Cow care? Maybe even a personal question about us  that we might let slip in? 😉 Feel free to leave a comment or send us a message. All questions will be kept completely anonymous so no need to feel shy :)

🧸YOGI BEAR💛 one of our youngest 3/4 guernsey girls!

Now that the big heifers are off to summer pasture, our little heifers are ready for their next step!
Big heifers, or what we call our yearlings who are between 1-2 years old, got to experience summer grazing last year and are now pros at this.
These little heifers though, or what we call this past fall's calves who are less than a year, have been taking advantage of the warmth and safety of the calf barn. But they've grown too big and the green pastures are calling for them to go spend their summer in the fresh air!
For the next week or two, these new young faces are going to be your welcoming committee next to the farm stand while they learn how to respect electric fencing!
