Today was a crazy day. The moved 159 bushels of apples by hand twice. Once out of the container and once up on the trailer they were loaded onto.
But the biggest news is my gofundme is up to $2k. Thanks for sharing it. Please keep sharing it.

Good morning everyone. It’s a beautiful foggy fall morning on Badgersett. These mornings are my favorites. The air is chilly. The leaves are starting to turn. And the world is quiet as if it’s holding its breath.

I love the fall.

I woke up to an amazing gift from all of you. The fundraiser broke $1000. That’s 20% of my goal. I’m so grateful and happy that people are sharing and donating. It makes me feel less alone.

Seriously working my myself on this farm most days can make a person feel so isolated. As if I’m just plugging the d**e every day and the rest of the world is walking by.

So thank you for all your help. Knowing you’re out there supporting me gives me hope.

Today I have to take a short break from harvest for the morning to get proposals for a conference I’m speaking at next spring written.

Yes I needed to work on them over the month of September. And yes this is last minute. But that’s what harvest does to me.

That and having my other career as an author. Writing is complicated for me. I agonize about it. Even doing these updates is fraught. I literally edit them. Go Meg. Sigh.

Anyway. Thanks for everything so far. Now I know we can make it and save this farm together. You are the reason I’m fighting on.

Quick update while I’m inside for a lunch break hiding from the heat. Minnesota is facing the warmest September on record with an average daily temperature 5-8° F above normal.

This means my harvest is in overdrive. Fun times. It also means that building crop systems that are climate safe and resilient is more important than ever.

Which leads me to a question I was asked last week on a tour of our hazel genetics in IL.
Why do I do this? It was foisted on me and it’s not my dream it’s Philip’s. So why am I working so hard to save it?
My answer last week is that I love Philip and I can’t stand by and watch his life’s work be ruined. Or forgotten.
But I have a different answer this week.

Because someone needs to.
Working under 50 year old apple and chestnut trees all week I realized that the trees deserve someone who cares to continue the work.
Work that can’t be done in a 2-5 year federal or university grant cycle. This work will take multiple lifetimes to finish.
It has taken most of Philip’s. And now a chunk of mine. But soon it will take the lifetimes of the next generations to come.
And just like the trees. Those people to come deserve someone who cares enough to hold the line.
That’s why I’m fighting so hard to save this work.

We need the chance to learn from our mistakes and prove that we can build a resilient future. Prove that we’re better than our past. Better than our mistakes.

You all are awesome. I’m at 10% of my goal. Every time I see a donation email I feel like crying from gratitude. Thank you all so much.

Farming chores are of course ongoing. Hazel harvest is done which means I’m 1/4 through harvest.
However the apples have decided to surprise me this year and start dropping early. So I’m going an about face and getting the orchard cleared of the ripe apples to sell to my cider guy. 30 bushels are picked so far and my legs are feeling it. (BTW grape boxes are perfect for apple harvest and free from my local grocery store)
Hopefully I’ll get 300 bushels harvested this year. Along with the chestnuts. Wish me luck.
