What Frogtown Johnnie's lacks in ambiance it makes up for in food. I'm thinking back to last summer when I had some of the best mac and cheese I've ever had, deluxe style with some spicy jalapeños and fried chicken chunks. Not a lot of people know that a majority of this bar's menu is made fresh and homemade.

From the handcut fries to the southwest eggrolls, it's a big menu. Sometimes they have specials and on Weds evenings after 8pm appetizers are half off. Now that is a Toledo deal! Have you been to the "Frog" before? Is that what cool people call it?

I call this girl dinner (maybe a lil elevated). I like Sidon Lebanese Grille & Bakery because their à la carte menu suits my little of this and little of that mood I sometimes get. Sometimes I want just a little tiny taste of steak and a side of buttery rice pilaf but I don't want a whole meal.

If you eat in you get served to your table the fresh hot from the oven pita and it's soooo good with the oil and seasonings to dip.

Here's my hits:

Beef kabob. It's beef tenderloin from the Middle Eastern Market next door and I always get it with a side of garlic sauce. For 8 dollars, the meat is like a perfect combo of char and juicy and I enjoy it medium rare.

Rice Pilaf. For 4 dollars it's a large amount of rice and it is buttery and tender. Usually with a meal it comes with slices of almond and I need to remember next time to request some.

Frozen mint lemonade: relatively newer on the menu and it is a perfect combo of sweet and tart and that sharp chilly taste of mint. First time I had a mint lemonade was at the International Festival last year and I'm looking forward to going again end of September.

Did you have a nice dinner too?

Have had it, it's a great burger! Also, upgrade to the handcut fries, worth it.

One of my first ever viral videos with 225k views before I had any followers anywhere, it's been a year of loving Melt Crepes & Gelato. Truly one of my favorite additions to Toledo in the past year, this is a business that stays innovative, listens to trends, and listens to it's customers. When people started complaining about AI they switched to using real photos of their food. They listened to their customers and it made a difference.

They are continuously following new trends: bubble waffles, those viral fruit cakes, strawberry dubai chocolate cups. I'm thankful one of my times doordash driving last year brought me there. I came back one night and I was hooked. The kindest people work there and their gelato is to the moon and back delicious.

And that is only HALF of the giant torta (a sandwich) and you get the birria consummé (all the meaty drippings in an au jus) to dip it in.

It's innnncredible. It's melty cheesy, it's a soft sandwich bread. So good.

Taqueria El Gallo De Oro is in the little mini mall behind Packo's on Secor. Check it out.

If someone said eat this whole plate of mala spicy crispy chicken for 100 dollars would you do it? Could you tolerate the spice? If 100 wouldn't do it, how much?

I'm curious what everyone's spice levels are and what it would take 😅 Personally, I think it would have to be more than a Benjamin Franklin to make me eat this entire plate. I was sweating after a few bites!

Yes those are Chinese chili peppers!!! 🌶

SPECIAL Toledo Alert! Registry Bistro has extended their Low Country Golden Hour menu one more week through September 3rd because of high demand!

Pickle brine fried chicken, beef cheek with Carolina BBQ sauce and a green tomato chow chow and greens, and this second visit (it's that good I went twice this month) I got the grilled & chilled succotash salad with edamame. That fresh sweet corn and then the sweet tang of the tiny heirloom tomatoes? Yummmm.

I've liked all of the Golden Hour special monthly menus so far but this was a definite double visit and then I got some of the same dishes from the first visit (that fried chicken!).

So you've got today 4 to 7pm, then next week Tues Weds Thurs 4 to 7pm and then... whoosh it's gone. Don't miss it. Seriously. This one is for everyone looking for Southern food.

More than once people have asked, "What makes you the authority to review food?" It happened on Monday and I'm always unsure how to answer.(adding edit: majority of the time with no ill intention in asking) I always usually reply with a simple "I like food." Really, that's all you need. You have a want to enjoy something and your intentions are good. Maybe you like the experience of dining.

I don't think you need to be a great chef, or have been to culinary school (though it helps with identifying ingredients and concepts at the higher end of restaurants), but just a curiosity for food and a want to support the enjoyment of dining at a restaurant. That's why all of my favorite reviewers are the ones looking to be positive and give you ideas of where to support local and feel good doing so.

While I do love the joke of being unseasoned and I only joke about adding raisins to potato salad because the valid horrified responses make me giggle, I definitely have sichuan peppercorns and rubbed sage and whole nutmeg cloves in my pantry. It's a problem. One recipe asks for it and my seasoning and ingredient shelf grows.

I love cooking and I miss doing it as much as I like. I've tried to work on plating and I'm sure a trained chef would say "A for effort." 😅

Anyway, I do not have any culinary background other than experimenting in the kitchen and being able to follow a recipe. But, here's some things I've made in the past few years that were pretty good. If you want to do food reviews, there's room for everyone. As long as you like food.

I'm not going to pretend I knew a lot about Dolly Parton or all her songs but what I do know I loved. She was kind, she stood up for everyone (and I mean everyone), she listened and learned and was willing to change with the times. She used her wealth to combat against poverty and funneled it toward education. You might have heard of Dolly Parton's Imagination Library.

She was more than a sweet self-deprecating quick wit with a musical talent. She was a good person. She'll always be a good person. That is the legacy she is leaving behind. I'll drop a link below to how to connect to getting your children or relatives free children's books from her foundation. Be patient with the website, it's going to be busy today.

I guess it's time for me to finally watch Steel Magnolias.

If you haven't met Ms. Rita at Bombay Kitchen you're missing out. She's a character, super kind, and the food is great for those looking to try some Indian food!
