A number of people have been inquiring about when we will be opening for the season. After much thought and prayer, I have decided to no longer continue with the business of Cottage Lavender. It has been a joy for me, especially in meeting so many people I may not have encountered otherwise.

My primary business, Allen Organs of the Emerald Coast, requires my full attention and I really need to keep my gardening and lavender ventures limited to a hobby.

I do still recommend the Phenomenal variety as the best for our area. I have noticed some other vendors on Marketplace making them available.

If anyone is interested in taking over this business, I do have a good bit of containers, recipes, sources and even the domain name available. I’ll be glad to discuss that option with you.

I do hope to see many of you again around town.

Bunch grapes are not known to grow too well here in Florida. But, these did great this year. I’ve already made some grape jam and have more to harvest. Yum! The muscadines are next.

Last Friday we had this great garden club visit the farm. I appreciated their interest in growing lavender and its particular challenges here in NW Florida. They asked all the right questions.

We were going to be open for the first time this season on Saturday. Wouldn't you know it?! It's going to be stormy that day.

So, we're going to move it to Friday, March 28th from 3-6 pm. We'll try again the following Saturday. This will be a plant-only sale. We're not geared up yet for our other products.

We have a garden club group coming for a visit this Friday from 12:30 to 2:30 so please no early birds.

Our address is 1989 S Highway 97, Cantonment

Apple maps give accurate directions but for some reason, Google maps say it's on the other side of the street. Look for the "1989" sign.

It’s that time of year again! I’m making some headway into up potting these 720 baby Phenomenal Lavender plants. We already have a good number of more mature ones, too. Our official opening day will be Saturday, March 29th from 10-2. Hope to see many of you on the farm!

We’re experiencing a historic winter storm here in Pensacola. The snowfall broke the all-time state record of 4” back in 1895! Official reports are still coming but it will most likely be from 7-10”. We measured 7” in many places around the farm. The lavender should be fine. Most lavender farms are much further north.

The sky turned lavender at sunset. It was the same color no matter which direction you looked. I couldn’t get a picture to do it justice. Others did and shared.

We’re the blue dot on the left of the picture and safe here in NW Florida. Not so much for the rest of the state. Praying nobody is ignoring the evacuation mandates and warnings. The storm surge is expected to be as high as 15’ to 20’ in some areas.

We’re actually open today from 10-2. We haven’t done that since Spring. If you’re in the area, it would be great to see you.

We have something new to offer: Logevity Lavender. This edible perennial is considered a super food because of its high nutritional value. Popeye would be proud. 😜 Google it for more info.

This weather has been brutal! The constant rain is very tough on lavender. They really don’t like “wet feet” and can develop root rot.

Here are a few tips:

1. Be sure your soil drains well. Clay is especially problematic. If in pots, be sure the drain hole is not blocked and do not use pans or saucers under them.
2. Do not mulch around the plants this holds in moisture. It’s better to use rock.
3. Choose the right companion plants and don’t crowd them. They need breathing room. Don’t place them alongside plants that need lots of water or acidic soil.

If you’ve lost some plants during this time, don’t be hard on yourself. It happens. I do have healthy plants available if you need them.

NOTE: We are currently open by appointment only and will be glad to arrange a time to meet.

Kinda crazy to post this at the end of the day but…

Today is National Lavender Day! There’s a day for everything else, so why not. Of course, it’s also National Dimples Day and National Sugar Cookie Day.

Please share any pictures of the most beautiful lavender fields you’ve seen.
