We are writing this to address a deeply upsetting and completely unacceptable incident that occurred at our farm stand during the recent farmers market. One of our employees chose to wear a hat displaying the words "Border Patrol."
We want to state clearly and unequivocally: We are profoundly sorry.
We recognize the immense pain, terror, and grief our community is experiencing following the tragic killing of Johan Sebastiรกn Durรกn Guerrero in Biddeford just days ago and the many other unexceptionable incidents across our country. To wear an enforcement symbol at a community market during a time of such raw trauma is incredibly insensitive, thoughtless, and harmful.
Alewive's Brook Farm does not condone, align with, or support this display. We believe that farmers markets must be safe, welcoming, and inclusive spaces for every single member of our Maine community, including our immigrant neighbors who are hurting right now.
We have addressed this directly with the employee involved, and we are reinforcing our internal expectations regarding community respect and awareness with our entire team.
We understand why people are angry, and we accept full accountability for the fact that this happened under our banner. We love this community, we hear you, and we are committed to earning back your trust.
