Part of the off-season tasks: destroy Spotted Lantern Fly eggs. These critters love grape vines and can significantly lower yields and eventually kill the plant. I found about 30 of these egg masses mostly on the end posts. There are several ways to get rid of the eggs. I choose the heat! Children, do not try this at home.

A beautiful sunrise on one day closer to opening.
Pruning is complete.
Interviewing some really great and interesting candidates for servers.
Furniture and equipment arriving daily.
No definite date for opening but will post when we know for certain

02/14/2026

Now we search for the missing pieces in this creation: the people who will serve. We will be posting positions for Tasting Room Associates and Tasting Room Lead.
We cannot stress enough what a critical role these individuals will play in the ultimate satisfaction of our future patrons.
If you are thinking, "Oh (insert name here) would be great at this!" Let "insert name here" know that they/you can message us or email at [email protected].
Cheers!

THE POWER
The sun is the solar powerhouse using the vines to make the grapes from sunlight, water and the soil. We, however, need some additional help.
The solar panels have arrived and will be on the roof soon. Again, the sun will intervene to help make the wine.

Ah, Nature
As one who is new to this, one of the pleasures of the vineyard is a new and close relationship to nature. The more exposure, experience and knowledge obtained, the more fascinated I am with how this process of cyclical growth, production, replication and winter rest. spirals out in time.

CREATION:
Decisions, decisions, decisions...
So where shall we make our wines and where shall we sell them? We looked at our existing barns and the Seashore Road sites. After several iterations we decided on 1076 Seashore Road.
In collaboration with Fenwick Architects, we designed the combination winery and tasting room. Lots of little details involved in a project like this.
Next the builder. Easy choice, Bowman Walker Construction! Worked with Lance and Dave before. Reliable, easy to work with and a certain degree of creative spirit. Got to know many of the subs and will thank them all individually.

GROWTH
Now the vines are in, and they are allowed to grow, unproductive, for several years. This allows them to put their energy into establishing their root system. For anyone, who, like me, was not tuned into the beautiful miracle of plant life, learning about the growth of grape vines and the production of grapes is truly fascinating.
The vines, like most plants, take the elements of sunlight, nutrients from the ground and water to produce growth and offspring. The grapes have evolved to make themselves tasty to birds and other animals to carry their seeds (in their intestinal tract) to new locations to propagate. (The tastiness only occurs when the seeds are mature enough to be viable if planted; Marvelous!)
We humans are ensnared in the vine's quest for global dominance by enlisting their yeast allies in the production of wine. We are simply very willing co-conspirators.

behind the scenes
Dealing with governmental regulations.
I do appreciate that many regulations are very much needed, especially in this environmentally sensitive and unique area, it's just that it makes trying to do certain things very difficult.
First, we needed to recombine the three lots of Seahorse Farm into one lot (CAFRA, DEP reasons) next we needed obtain local approvals (Lower Township, Right To Farm), then we apply for a Federal Winery License (TTB Regulations), then a NJ State License (ABC Regulations which BTW requires a fully built winery including equipment and a vineyard of at least 3 acres established BEFORE a license can be considered) and of course the associated building permits and Department of Health Regulations...

Another beginning:
So, now that we have the land, we now need the grapes. Something you will understand about us: we like to experiment and try new things. In keeping with this personality trait, we decided to plant the usual vinifera (French style grapes) but add some that aren't grown around here yet.
Cabernet sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet franc, Sangiovese and Petit Verdot as our traditional red grapes and Sauvignon Blanc and Alberino as our traditional white grapes. I also added Gamay (a really nice wine).
BUT I am of Greek extraction so (if you know anything about Greek personalities) we added Assyrtiko, a white grape, Moscofilero, a white grape and Xinomavro, a red grape.
Our planting began in the Spring of 2021.

SERENDIPITY: the occurrence and development of events by chance in a happy or beneficial way.
This is the key to Seahorse Farm Winery.
We have always been Jersey Shore people but now; after being bitten by the wine making bug, we faced a dilemma. Providence provided, with the sale of the Seahorse Farm Equestrian Center and horse farm from Bob and Maria, both wonderful people. We are right on Cape May Island, 2 miles from the beach!

SERENDIPITY: Two lots between the horse farm and the main road (Seashore Road) came up for sale and we were very fortunate to obtain both. This gave us access to one of the two roads that lead into Cape May.

Here is a beginning: Wine and I did not start out in a good relationship. If I drank wine, I would be immediately stricken with a debilitating migraine. This went on until it just stopped at some point in my 50's.
Once liberated I began to enjoy wine so much that my wife and children gifted me a wine making kit for my birthday. It was fun, very interesting and made good wine. I was hooked.
I then began making wine from other kits, juices and grapes. I made wine from other fruits. I then planted and grew my own grapes and made wine from them. All in Central Pennsylvania where I lived and worked.
As luck would have it, the local community college, HACC, started a Enology (Wine making) and Enology (Grape vine growing) program. I enrolled and within two and a half years completed my studies.
Here I am at that time making dandelion wine in my cellar.
