Due to the severity of the disease CLR (coffee leaf rust- discovered in South Kona in 11/20) and the ongoing pest CBB (coffee berry borer) we are cutting down all our coffee trees. Thus we'll be buying our household coffee in about 10 weeks. our next crop comes in 2 more years.

The image on this page is a print by noted Big Island artist Edwin Kayton. A photoshopped version of it (going from round to rectangular) graces our coffee label. We are grateful for his permission to use it. It shows a canoe on a moonlit beach. Canoes are interwoven with Hawaiian culture. It is believed (but not known) that large double hulled voyaging canoes brought the first people here (probably from Tahiti and probably between 124 and 1120 AD). Small single hulled canoes like the one in this picture were vital to fishing and became the means for competitive paddling. Paddling is still the most popular sport in Hawaii.

This has been a dreadful year for coffee farmers in Kona. Heavy infestation with coffee leaf rust (a fungal disease) began in December 2020 and has caused significant defoliation which means our trees are struggling to survive and thus have produced much less “cherry” than usual. The weather has been the wettest on record which favors the spread of the CLR fungus. The remedy for dealing with CLR is spraying every 3 weeks. This is expensive from the standpoint of both labor and chemicals. Yes there is a chemical for use on organic farms. It’s no surprise that it’s more expensive than the conventional alternative. Our sprayer has been unreliable about showing up when needed. Sprayers are very hard to find so we are sort of “over a barrel” and are grateful when he does have time for us. He’s a fellow coffee farmer and we like and appreciate him. This year’s crop is the smallest we have ever had. Is it any wonder that the majority of coffee is grown in 3rd world countries. The cheap (and sometimes exploitive) labor situation in these countries makes growing coffee a profitable enterprise. We do our own farm work as we could not possibly afford to pay even minimum wages to paid workers. We have been blessed by occasional “work trade” volunteers to help us but still have never made a profit. Some farmers who have good marketing manage to get $50 a pound for their coffee but I’ve never had more than small website which never brought us much business. And some past farm volunteers who said they could “help” us took down my former site and never built the new one that they promised. So thus page is my only online presence. More later on the farm. We do have a very limited amount of roasted coffee to sell. Message me if you are interested. Happy New Year everyone! 2022 can only get better!

It occurred to Pooh and Piglet that they hadn't heard from Eeyore for several days, so they put on their hats and coats and trotted across the Hundred Acre Wood to Eeyore's house. Inside the house was Eeyore.

"Hello Eeyore," said Pooh.

"Hello Pooh. Hello Piglet" said Eeyore, in a Glum sounding voice.

"We just thought we'd check on you," said Piglet, "because we hadn't heard from you, and so we wanted to know if you were okay."

Eeyore was silent for a moment. "Am I okay?" he asked, eventually. "Well, I don't know, to be honest. Are any of us really okay? That's what I ask myself. All I can tell you, Pooh and Piglet, is that right now I feel really rather Sad, and Alone, and Not Much Fun To Be Around At All.

Which is why I haven't bothered you. Because you wouldn't want to waste your time hanging out with someone who is Sad, and Alone, and Not Much Fun To Be Around At All, would you now."

Pooh looked and Piglet, and Piglet looked at Pooh, and they both sat down, one on either side of Eeyore in his stick house.

Eeyore looked at them in surprise. "What are you doing?"

"We're sitting here with you," said Pooh, "because we are your friends. And true friends don't care if someone is feeling Sad, or Alone, or Not Much Fun To Be Around At All. True friends are there for you anyway. And so here we are."

"Oh," said Eeyore. "Oh." And the three of them sat there in silence, and while Pooh and Piglet said nothing at all; somehow, almost imperceptibly, Eeyore started to feel a very tiny little bit better.

Because Pooh and Piglet were There.
No more; no less.
