Aloha. My name is Laryssa and I’m the owner of Bee Happy Hawaii. This company came as a result of me falling in love with beekeeping 7 years ago.
My first year as a beekeeper couldn’t have gone much worse than it did. A few days into getting my first hive, the bees took off and I was left with no bees for the rest of the year. The next year I built a second hive and purchased two more packages of bees and both hives did well. I loved spending time with the bees. My brain would calm down and unnecessary thoughts disappeared.
On a whim, I decided to take a trip to Hawai‘i the Fall of my first year as a beekeeper and fell in love with the Big Island. When I got home, I found an internship working on a bee farm and was back on a plane to Hawaii two months later. My mother cried and I knew most people wouldn’t understand me leaving my work (a job I worked so hard to get), but I couldn’t pass up the opportunity.
A six month internship turned into a beekeeping position at a farm up the road. While working for a large beekeeping operation, I learned a lot about honey forgery and chemical treatments put into beehives. It’s amazing how unaware I was of what people do in this industry! Many beekeepers, even hobbyists, feed their bees sugar syrup to keep them fed through the Winter and Spring before the flowers bloom, water down their honey by mixing corn syrup with it, feed their bees sugar syrup and put chemical treatments in the hive to combat parasites. Unfortunately, most honey you will find in the grocery store is part honey, part corn syrup and has a high level of chemicals in it.
Eventually, I got two hives (a generous donation from my previous employer), started collecting swarms and harvesting honey. At the moment, we have 25 hives in our apiary.
I began making candles 3 years into keeping bees. As a designer and creative person, I couldn’t stand the boring candle mold designs on all the beekeeping websites and so began to explore how I could make my own candle molds.
