We're in the Newspaper! Kent, Daniel and I were interviewed by Tacoma News Tribune journalist, Isabela Lund and photographer Brian Hayes earlier this month. I was curious how the article would be written, and how we would be represented, I really like the introductory video which tells the story in a nutshell. I blushed a few times while reading it, thinking to myself: 'did I really say that?'.
All in all, I think it's a good article and worth the read.

“We’re just learning how to take care of each other,” one resident told The News Tribune.

I love making DIRT! Creating and using by-products on our property is so rewarding & satisfying. One of my favorite days of the year is when we rotate our Compost Bins and are rewarded with beautiful SOIL to use as mulch and amend our beds.
We save the wood ash from our wood stove all winter, it makes a great soil additive, wood ash contains calcium, an element that elevates soil pH, Wood ash is also high in potassium and is prized for its desiccating attribute, which makes it repellent to snails, slugs and soft-bodied insects. USE what you have!

The Washington State Department of Transportation published an ONLINE OPEN HOUSE today. There are now 7 (SEVEN) ALTERNATIVES available on the future of STATE ROUTE 165 at the Carbon River. Most ALTERNATIVES would take up to SIX YEARS. *See for YOURSELF. The planning study evaluates tradeoffs of different options. The online open house gives people the opportunity to view proposed recommendations and long-term transportation needs. ** FEEDBACK/COMMENTS ACCEPTED MAY 28 through JUNE 17. - CLICK ON LINK BELOW:

Due to the immediate closure of SR 165/Fairfax Bridge earlier this week, Kent and I have no choice but to close our Hipcamp campsite. This would have been our 6th year providing a private campsite on our property in the Carbon Canyon, we weren't expecting this news one month before opening, but here we are.

Washington State Department of Transportation closed State Route 165/Fairfax Bridge to all vehicle and pedestrian traffic.
SR 165 & the Fairfax Bridge was the only motorized public access into the Carbon Canyon, there is no public alternative route at this time. We were told it may take years before the public has access again.
The Washington State Dept. of Transportation gained access to a logging road for residents to use, it is gated and locked.
Kent and I wrote WSDOT for clarification and received an email stating that we were not allowed to es**rt campers in & out, the road is strictly for our personal use.
The bridge closure is bittersweet for us, Daniel, Kent and I put everything we had into making this a special place to camp, we enjoyed meeting people from all over the world who stayed at our modest campsite in the cedar grove. When Mowich was open, we were booked nearly every single day. It was fun while it lasted.

Date Night #4:🔥Kent and I have been attending the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) classes in Wilkeson this month, we're learning valuable skills to help ourselves and to help others in case of an emergency. Last nights class included learning how to identify & shut off a gas meter and hands on practice putting out a fire with a fire extinguisher. City of Buckley Fire Department, Carbonado & Wilkeson Volunteer Firefighters helped set the stage for our class, Photo courtesy of Daryl Dinwiddie

Lo Tahoma is an 18 acre homestead of diverse land including 15 forested acres just 5 miles from the NW entrance to Mt. Rainier National Park and 1/4 mile walk to the glacier fed Carbon River. We mill our own lumber from trees off our property using a portable sawmill, share self-sustainable knowledge through small, intimate classes in a forest setting and will have a campsite available to the public in the Spring of 2020.
