Taking a multivitamin every day feels like a pretty easy insurance policy for your health.

But preventing a nutrient deficiency and preventing chronic disease are two different things.

When researchers have looked at multivitamins for the prevention of cardiovascular disease and cancer, the results haven’t given us strong evidence that taking one every day is going to protect you from either.

That doesn’t make multivitamins useless.

They can be incredibly important when someone has a deficiency, increased nutrient needs, limited intake, malabsorption, or another reason supplementation is appropriate.

But “this helps me meet my nutrient needs” is very different from:

“This prevents heart disease and cancer.”

Supplements can fill gaps.

They just can’t supplement your way out of everything else that matters for your health.

If a little is good, more must be better.

Except that’s not how vitamins work.

Your body needs vitamins and minerals in specific amounts to function properly. But once you’re meeting your needs, taking more doesn’t necessarily give you more benefit.

And with some nutrients, more can actually become a problem.

Water soluble vitamins are often described as something you’ll “just p*e out,” but that doesn’t mean taking huge doses is always harmless.

And fat soluble vitamins like A, D, E, and K can be stored in the body, which means excessive intake can build up over time.

Supplements can absolutely have a place when there’s a deficiency, increased need, limited intake, or another reason to supplement.

But supplements aren’t Pokémon.

You don’t need to collect them all. 😂

But if you’re doing our challenge and you’re trying to collect points, comment “enough” for points!

Chicken Spiedies 👀

Herb-marinated chicken, balsamic quinoa salad, and turmeric-roasted cauliflower.

Bright, savory, a little tangy, and the kind of meal that makes eating well feel way less depressing than another container of plain chicken and broccoli.

Freshly made. Ready when you are. 💪

Eat more fiber for a “healthier gut microbiome.”

Okay…but what does that actually mean? 👀

Because “gut health” gets thrown around like it’s one single measurable thing.

It’s not.

In the study we’re talking about here, increasing fiber didn’t significantly increase overall microbial diversity.

But that doesn’t mean nothing happened.

Researchers found changes in the functional capacity of the microbiome instead.

And THAT distinction matters.

A microbiome doesn’t necessarily have to contain more different kinds of bacteria for the bacteria already living there to respond differently to what you’re feeding them.

Which brings us back to something we’ve been talking about all week:

Fiber isn’t one thing.

Different fibers have different properties.

Different bacteria can use different substrates.

And changing what you eat can influence what those microbes are doing.

So is “eat more fiber for your gut” completely wrong?

No.

It’s just a hell of a lot more complicated than:

MORE FIBER = MORE GOOD BACTERIA. 😂

Nutrition science rarely gives us conclusions that clean.

And personally?

I think that’s what makes it interesting. 🤓

Fiber is fiber, right?

Not exactly. 👀

Two foods can both contain 5 grams of fiber and still have very different effects in your body.

That’s because “fiber” is actually a pretty broad category.

Some fibers are more viscous, meaning they form a gel like substance in your gut.

Psyllium is a good example, and that property is part of why it can help with things like LDL cholesterol, blood sugar response, and stool consistency.

Other fibers are more easily fermented by your gut bacteria. Inulin is one example.

These fibers can help feed certain bacteria in your gut, but they may also produce more gas and bloating in some people.

And plenty of foods contain a MIX of different fibers with different properties.

So when you hear:
“Eat more fiber.”

That’s not bad advice.
It’s just incomplete.

Because the amount of fiber matters, but the TYPE and SOURCE matter too.

Which is exactly why eating a variety of fiber rich foods beats obsessing over one magic fiber number. 👏
