🍷 The Speech That Saved Southern Illinois 🇺🇸

In August 1861, our region stood at a critical crossroads. With deeply divided loyalties and strong pro-Southern sympathies echoing through the area, a single moment changed the course of history right here in Marion, Illinois.

On or around August 19, 1861, John A. Logan stood before a local crowd and delivered a powerful declaration that would define his legacy: "The time has come when a man must be for or against his country".

This influential speech successfully rallied Southern Illinois to support the Union. In fact, future President Ulysses S. Grant later credited this exact address by Logan with keeping Southern Illinois firmly aligned with the Union camp! Following this historic moment, Logan immediately stepped into action, organizing and recruiting local men to form the 31st Illinois Infantry Regiment and launching his legendary Civil War military career.
