Strawberry Blite, Blitum Capitatum (Amarantaceae) is a native plant to United States. Also known as strawberry spinach, Strawberry goosefoot, Indian Paint and many other names.

Similar to its cousin spinach, young leaves and berries are great additions to salads. Adding color and texture. Wait until the berries to fully ripened for juicy sweet flavor. Berries can be eaten raw or cooked in syrup or jelly.

Raw leaves contain oxalates and should be eaten in moderation. Seeds may be toxic when eaten in large quantities.

Old fashion Blackberries like these are delicious. Though there is a little trick to picking the perfect berry.

When there hasn’t been in a drop of rain in weeks one may notice berries are dark, but tight in flesh. After a good rain the next sunny day the berries will look plump and bigger in size. If they are completely dark, and pull off when lightly tugged on then that will be the perfect blackberry.

There is nothing like the smell of herbs. It’s the after smell; after you’ve ran your hand over the plant and get a whiff of it’s aroma.

Basil in particular, is what comes to mind when I think of going to pick herbs. This dark opal basil pictured is stunning right now. It’s color ranges from dark purple to a purple/green hue as the plant matures. The contrast is breathtaking.
