One of the things we love about the farm store is being able to introduce you to products made by other small farms doing interesting work right here in Ohio.
We carry Ohio Elderberry Farm + Kitchen Elderberry Syrup from Mucky Boots Farm, made with American elderberries grown on their farm in Adams County, Ohio, in the foothills of Appalachia.
What started as a backyard elderberry project has grown into hundreds of elderberry bushes and a whole line of elderberry and elderflower products.
And these aren’t imported berries. They grow American elderberry, a plant native to Ohio that naturally grows along woodland edges, fields, streams, and roadsides.
When the berries are ripe, they’re harvested by hand and frozen the same day. To make the syrup, the berries are warmed, juiced and strained, then blended with honey.
The result is a tart, lightly sweet elderberry syrup that can be enjoyed in all kinds of ways:
• Take a small sip on its own
• Add it to tea or sparkling water
• Blend it into a smoothie
• Stir it into yogurt
• Use it in salad dressing or a glaze
• Drizzle it over dessert
We also love that they approach growing with the surrounding ecosystem in mind, including soil health, pollinator habitat, and low-impact pest management.
Another Ohio-grown product with a pretty great story behind it.
