Field Report: Sweet potatoes out.🍠 Garlic going in. 🧄

It’s one of those transition months in the fields. The crew has been busy digging sweet potatoes before the cold settles in, and some of that harvest has already made its way into the farm store!

Here’s the fun part: sweet potatoes actually get sweeter after harvest. As they cure, some of their starches convert to sugars, their skins toughen up, and little harvest nicks begin to heal, helping them store longer.

They’ve got a lot going for them nutritionally, too. Sweet potatoes are a good source of fiber, potassium, vitamin C, and beta-carotene, especially the orange-fleshed varieties.

And despite the name, sweet potatoes aren’t actually potatoes at all. They’re members of the morning glory family.

One crop comes out, another goes in. That’s fall on the farm. 🍂

And these sweet potatoes didn’t travel far to get here. They were grown right here at Farm on Central and are in the farm store now.

Cabbage deserves a little more credit.

Fresh-picked cabbage is in the farm store right now, and it might be one of the most useful vegetables to have in the fridge.

Roast it into crispy wedges. Turn it into slaw. Stuff the leaves with beef and rice. Fry it with onions and bacon. Or make your own sauerkraut.

It keeps well, stretches into a lot of meals, and works with just about everything.

If you need a little inspiration, try roasted cabbage wedges at 425°F with olive oil, salt, and pepper until the edges get caramelized and crispy.

What’s your favorite way to cook cabbage?!

Shop local. Give local.

Our Community Giveback event is happening next week, and this time it’s all about fall decor.

From Tuesday, October 20 through Thursday, October 22, shoppers can support a participating local organization simply by mentioning that group at checkout.

25% of eligible fall decor sales will go back to the organization you choose to support.

Eligible items include:
- Pumpkins
- Hay bales
- Corn stalks
- Spider Plants

So if you’ve been meaning to decorate the porch, stock up on pumpkins, or add a few finishing touches for fall, this is a great time to do it while also supporting a local school, team, church, nonprofit, or community group.
