Co-regulation is the process of calming, supporting, and guiding another person's nervous system—not with words, but through presence, body language, tone, breath, and relationship.
It’s how we help each other feel safe.
💛 In simple terms:
Co-regulation is when one regulated nervous system helps another return to balance.
It’s the foundation for self-regulation—especially in children, especially after adversity.
🧠 Why it matters:
Children don’t learn to self-regulate in isolation.
They learn it by being near someone who is already calm, safe, and steady.
It’s not just for emotional outbursts.
Co-regulation is equally about the little moments—matching a child’s energy, softening your voice, making eye contact, staying close without pushing.
It’s essential for trauma recovery.
When a child has experienced unpredictability or threat, their nervous system becomes hyper-vigilant.
Co-regulation helps that system unlearn danger and begin to trust again—often before the child can even verbalize what’s happening.
🐴 Why horses are incredible co-regulators:
Horses are prey animals, constantly tuned into the energy and regulation of those around them.
They respond to what we feel—not just what we say.
They don’t judge, correct, or overwhelm.
They mirror and offer presence, which can be a powerful, nonverbal way to help a dysregulated nervous system feel safe.
At Sorli Farm Therapeutic Barn, co-regulation is at the heart of everything we do.
Before kids (and adults!) can learn or connect or grow—they need to feel safe.
We start there.
