Danamere Farms

Danamere Farms Danamere Farms, Inc. is a multi-use farm located in Carlisle, IA The farm was first settled in 1848, just after Iowa became a state.

In 1935, Erik Lindhardt, a Danish expatriate, bought a farm south of Des Moines and moved there with his wife Elizabeth and their children. Eighty years later, Lindy and Liz's descendants still have the farm and have embarked on a new project to renovate it as demonstration of progressive farming and conservation practices. Lindy renamed it “Danamere,” shorthand for “Denmark in America.” (Danmark

, what the Danes call their country, + America.) He added the ‘e’ at the end in order to give it a secondary meaning: “Little Denmark.”

The photos accumulating here document the family’s progress repairing the barns and equipment, re-erecting the fences, restoring the native tallgrass prairie and oak savanna (an endangered ecosystem nationally), establishing new gardens and orchards, and welcoming back the wild and domestic animals that traditionally inhabited the place.
