The current farm side quest: recruiting an army of crows. For the sole reason of training my minions to trade trinkets for food.

We put out peanuts, pop tabs, and cat food. Got one crow. He showed up, assessed the situation, and apparently decided we were a maybe.

A MAYBE. Not even a guarantee he tells his friends.

Somebody asked what it’s like wearing a bee suit.

It’s hot. It’s sweaty. You get stung sometimes… then you question how they got through the suit… then you ask yourself if you actually zipped up the suit. All of that I can deal with.

What sometimes gets me is the sound. Some days you open that hive and every instinct goes — maybe not today.

Turn the volume up. And just to be clear, this isn’t even them on a bad day. 🐝

P.S. if you’re wondering if I’ve ever not zipped up the suit. The answer is yes…..multiple times. 🤷‍♂️

Black walnut trees make sap. You can turn that sap into syrup. Most people have absolutely no idea this is a real thing, and honestly that tracks — nobody’s really looked into it.

That’s kind of the point.

Cedar Hill is running a two-year research project with support from SARE to figure out if walnut syrup is something worth pursuing around here. We need 10–15 farmers with walnut trees who are willing to tap them in the winter and haul the sap out to Cedar Hill. We’ll take it from there. You’ll be compensated, all equipment is provided, and you don’t need to know anything going in.

It’s not glamorous. It’s January in Kentucky and you’ll be messing with tree sap. But if you’re the type who likes being part of something before it’s a thing — or you’re just looking for a reason to be outside in the cold — we’d love to have you.

Last year’s winter freeze wrecked the new growth and we ended up with 3 gallons of blackberries. THREE. We normally get 200 to 250.

This year’s looking like 100 to 150, which after last year feels like winning the lottery.

Only a couple more weeks until blackberry season…. Oh and don’t forget the farm stand will be open this Saturday and Sunday. 🍇
