MacDonald Vineyards: One of Napa’s Rarest To Kalon Cabernets

MacDonald is one of the most tightly allocated Cabernet Sauvignons in Napa Valley, produced by brothers Alex and Graeme MacDonald from their family’s historic parcel of To Kalon Vineyard in Oakville. Today, the brothers bottle the fruit themselves, producing a remarkably small amount of Cabernet from some of the oldest remaining vines in Napa Valley.

The centerpiece of this collection is the 2016 MacDonald Cabernet Sauvignon, one of the most acclaimed and valuable vintages in the estate’s history. Jeb Dunnuck awarded it 100 points, describing it as a “magical w**e,” while W**e Advocate awarded 98 points and noted that much of the fruit came from vines approximately 45 to 65 years old.

Opportunities to assemble a vertical of MacDonald are exceptionally uncommon, particularly with single-owner provenance and seven consecutive available vintages. For collectors of To Kalon, cult Napa Cabernet, or w**es with a direct connection to Napa’s most important vineyard history, this is a collection worth a closer look.
