Recently, we had the pleasure of a reciprocal farm visit with our friends at Deck Family Farm. First, our team headed to their place to see how they manage their land, livestock and business—and then we welcomed their crew to The Ground at Tabula Rasa Farms,

There’s something especially valuable about spending time with another like-minded farm. Walking the land together, comparing notes, asking questions, sharing what’s working, and what we’re all still figuring out.

When they came our way, we got to share some of our own work, including Shangri-La, our water-retention landscape of ponds and earthworks. It was a hit, and on a hot summer day, more than a few people ended up jumping in to cool off.

And maybe the best part of both visits was ending where so much of this work ultimately leads: the table.

At both farms, we sat down together over lunch made with food raised and grown close to home. Good food, good conversation, and a little more time to trade stories and ideas.

We came away inspired and grateful for farms like Deck Family Farm who are willing to open their gates, share what they know, and keep learning alongside us.

Farm to farm. Field to table. A pretty good way to spend a summer day.

When food makes it from field to table, it’s not an accident. It’s the outcome of hands that seed, tend, and watch closely for what’s ready.

This week, those hands kept working through haze and smoke-filled skies - our team, and farmers across the region, made sure fresh, local food still made it to the table.

It’s a part of the process most people never see. Hands in the dirt, hours before sunrise, long before a bunch of carrots or a crate of tomatoes reaches you.

Let’s give our team, and farmers everywhere, a hand.

Each winter, hay becomes more than feed; it builds biomass, strengthens soil, and helps our pastures capture the fall & winter rains that define life in the Pacific Northwest.

Building soil is the foundation of regenerative farming. Everything else follows.

The past few years have reminded us how connected our food system is to events happening thousands of miles away.

A shipping lane closes. Fertilizer prices rise. Fuel costs jump. Suddenly the cost of producing food changes for farmers everywhere.

It’s a reminder that local farms aren’t just places that grow food.

They’re part of a community’s resilience.

When farmers, ranchers, processors, markets, restaurants, and customers work together, communities are better able to weather uncertainty and keep food moving close to home.

Not because we can grow everything ourselves.

But because every region is stronger when it can produce more of what it needs.

That’s part of what we’re building at The Ground @ Tabula Rasa Farms.

There is a real beauty out here that can only be glimpsed by those who take the time to venture into the pastures — to be with the animals, to form a relationship. This photo was taken by someone who lives on this farm. Someone who shows up every day.

Farming teaches you something every season. That’s not poetry — it’s just the job.

One of our ongoing lessons has been turkeys. Hitting the 14-16 pound finished weight our customers actually want. It sounds simple. It isn’t. Getting a pasture-raised bird to land consistently in that window takes more intention than most people realize.

So this year we made a change. Signature Broad Breasted Blacks from Meyer Hatchery…a slower-growing bird that gives us better control over finished weight.
116 poults arrived this week.

This is what the beginning of Thanksgiving looks like. 🍗🦃

Grocery store potatoes are bred to survive shipping.

Ours are grown in regenerative soil we’ve been building for a decade…because nutrient density starts underground, long before the plant does.
Eight varieties went in this week: golds, reds, purples, fingerlings. Planted in trenches, hilled as they grow.
