There's a reason this part of California doesn't look — or taste — like anywhere else. Those rock spires on the horizon are the Pinnacles, shaped by a volcano some 28 million years ago. Ever since, the San Andreas Fault has kept reworking the ground beneath them, slowly splitting the formation apart as the Pacific and Continental plates grind past each other.

It's rare enough terrain — volcanic soil, shifting fault lines, high elevation — that the area earned its own American Viticultural Area. That's Chalone.
