💧 Those shiny flakes in your well water may be mica.
Mica is a naturally occurring mineral commonly found in schist bedrock. Small flakes can enter a drilled well and collect in plumbing fixtures, appliances and filter housings.
A filter that is too fine may trap the mica, but it can also plug quickly and reduce water pressure. That is why Well Pump Pro recommends a 50-micron filter element for most applications. Fifty microns is approximately the diameter of a human hair—fine enough to remove troublesome sediment while still allowing good water flow and reasonable filter life.
The best filter is not always the finest filter (5-1 micron). It is the one properly matched to your water, sediment load and household demand.

How do we trouble shoot your well pump issues? In this case the constant pressure drive can point us in the right direction by giving us a fault code but we always use our electrical meters to double check how your pump is running. Here we are checking the running amps of the well pump. The running amps can help us determine if the pump is running at all and tell us how hard the pump is working. I recall as a child that my dad would wait by the phone after a lighting storm for people that had their well pump damaged by the storm. After several days of sever storms we have been super busy. Even the boss had to go out and pull a well pump.

A well cap practically flush with the ground makes for a great home for bugs and critters. This well could use a simple casing extension and a proper bug proof well cap. Code for well casing height is 12-18 inches from grade. Keep bacteria out of your water and keep your drinking water safe! Some wells have lots of sediment/mineral material which over time can impact the lifespan of your well pump. To help mitigate the amount of sediment your pump draws in a 4" PVC sleeve can be slid overtop allowing the heavy sediment material to pass right by the pump to the bottom of the well.

Picture of a well that occasionally overflows. Mineral Deposits and flaking parts of casing tell us the water level often reaches the top of this well. You can also see the fitting known as the pitless adapter. This fitting allows your water pipe to make a 90 degree turn heading underground and into your house. When doing service on a well pump we screw a steel bar into the pitless adapter and lift, exposing the pipe your well pump is attached to.
