This is Dotty. She is the last of our original flock that we brought home around 7 years ago. Dotty was born in the spring of 2008 making her "pretty old" in duck years. She is the most outgoing and talkative of the group and has been alpha female since the beginning. One of the fun things Dotty does is wait by our feet while we empty the kiddie pools every day because she knows when we lift them up there will be a whole bunch of earth worms underneath. Dotty has even survived being picked up by an eagle and dropped from a 10 ft height!

After a few days with the baby pen gate open, the ducklings rushed out into the main yard and found a whole new terrain to explore. Staying in a tight group they met the geese (the little wild one is a fearless little quacker!), the other ducks (with the little wild one, again, being the lead investigator) and beat the heat in kiddie pools and a sprinkler in the shade. On the second evening, instead of putting themselves away into their baby hut, they put themselves away in the adult duck house they were intended for! Thanks for making the job easy little quackers...... hopefully they continue to be so cooperative!

Wild duck update.... now a teenager.... possibly a female.... still totally adorable. We opened up the baby run to allow them to mix with the adults.... a few tentative steps outside of their borders the first day but other than that, still hanging out in the baby pen.

In this video you can see the little wild duck hop in the pool on the front right hand side, cruise around and then nimbly hop out the back left. Too cute!!!

Last week Sam set up a special place in our flower garden for Gimples, our duck with a withered leg. She has had a withered leg for most of her life but is healthy otherwise and spends her day swimming and hanging out. She had been living in one of the duck houses off to the side but - with geese being the jerks they can be - she would be messed with occasionally. Now - in Gimple's Gardens - she has a deluxe accommodation under our back stoop (its been turned into a duck house that is securely locked up at night). All the grass she can eat, flowers to lay amongst and her own pool. AND best of all.... there is a crack in the garden gate that allows ducky visitors in to come in and say "hi". Her boyfriend, Cassanova, spends the most time with her.

Exciting week at Bompy's Feather Farm! Due to an unfortunate event a wild mallard duckling was stranded without its family. Due to a fortunate event a neighbor found it. After taking VERY GOOD care of it for two weeks, they found us and now we have the little guy (or girl) with our ducklings. Its adorable how they interact - the little one (Franci/es) - sleeps right in the middle of the pile at naptime!

Pool party! You can see them practice immediate evacuation of the pool area. Nothing perceptible will set it off....just getting ready for the real world.

Oh boy! They grow so fast! Everyone is doing very well and the group was moved outside to their temporary housing on Monday. Once they are big enough they will join the adults in Duck House 1. On Wednesday I picked up 2 little leftover ducklings from the feed store and introduced them to the flock.... you'll see them in the video... they are black and yellow and a little smaller than everyone else. Pool party later today!!!!!
