One of the most common questions we receive is: Are your blueberries organic?

The short answer is: No, we are not certified organic. However, our use of chemicals is very limited, and we work hard to grow healthy, delicious berries using the least intervention possible.

There are two main reasons we are not certified organic:

1. Mummy Berry Disease
In the Pacific Northwest, blueberries are susceptible to a fungal disease called Mummy Berry. To protect our crop, we apply a preventative treatment once each year before the plants wake up from dormancy in late March or early April. Most blueberry farms—including many organic operations—take similar measures. Once flowering begins, we stop spraying. Without this protection, we could lose a significant portion of our crop, resulting in much higher berry prices.

2. Bindw**d Control
We also occasionally spot-treat a persistent invasive w**d called bindw**d. You may recognize it by its white, trumpet-shaped flowers. Left unchecked, bindw**d can overtake an entire field and threaten the long-term health of the farm. Fortunately, it is limited to just a few small areas, so we only treat those specific patches rather than spraying broadly.

For the rest of the farm, we rely on a combination of mechanical cultivation, natural acid-based w**d control, and flame w**ding methods that are commonly used in organic agriculture.

If you’d like evidence that our farm supports a healthy ecosystem, just look around. You’ll find plenty of bees, butterflies, and beneficial insects throughout the field. More than 40 honeybee colonies call our farm home and continue to thrive. Most importantly, our own family has been eating blueberries from this farm for over 20 years.

If organic blueberries are important to you, let us know. We do maintain a small organic patch, but production is very limited and availability is not guaranteed.

Thank you for supporting local farming and for asking great questions about how your food is grown!

🫐 Warning: This Year’s Blueberries May Be Disappointing 🫐

Thanks to the unusually warm weather, our bushes made the terrible decision to produce blueberries that are larger, sweeter, and more flavorful than usual.

We sincerely apologize to anyone who prefers their blueberries smaller, tarter, and harder to pick.

U-Pick season at Henna Blueberry Farm is almost here. We will send out the exact opening date by this weekend. Come experience this unfortunate situation for yourself. 😄
