The 28 chickens that came to the farm this spring are all laying eggs now. I much prefer having a surplus of pasture raised eggs than having to buy them at the store.

Black beans got brought back into the farm this year, I haven't grown them since 2016. Black beans are a cool crop because all they need done to them to eat is cooking them. The first picture is of one of the cover crops that they were planted into and after it was worked in the ground. The 5th picture is of them growing great in a mat of hairy vetch. The last picture is of a bad spot before cultivating.

This year I gave a new crop a try Yellow Peas. We will see how they did in a couple days when they dry out from the rain today. Speaking of rain we didn't have any that soaked into the ground from April to late June. Looking at the peas the drought definitely hurt them most plants only have 4 pods where a neighbor who has irrigation has 9 on his. Still excited to get in the field and harvest them though.

It's been a beautiful spring so far. The chickens are laying eggs the cover crops are growing again and we even did some seeding of peas. This time around we went with a variety of birds to give us colorful eggs we plan to add some blue egg layers. In the picture of the cover crop you can see rye, hairy vetch and winter peas. Hidden in there is some clover too. We are trying out two new things this week field peas and the pottinger drill. I was super impressed by the way the drill worked (you can drive 12mph and still be accurate). official

It has been a busy week. The h**p is finally all wrapped up and the soybeans are half done. I have been running the spreader this week and the drill. All of our acres are getting a cover crop or a grain for next year's harvest, so there have been some late nights. This time of year is always hard because you put so much the in the tractor or at the shop and you miss out on family time. Kristin always brings lunch and dinner so I do get a couple minutes with the girls then. We only have a couple good days of soybean harvest and then we are in the home stretch with just 90 acres of corn this year. We are so excited to continue this regenerate process on the farm.

Alright Garden post coming your way::

First of all. My husband is super into regenerative farming. He’s way better at explaining this than I am but basically you do things people like me think make no sense 🤣

You’re adding nutrients to the dirt, and that means a lot of times you can double plant things to help the dirt and be w**d control for you! So, here’s our garden story.

We planting our garden baby plants into cover crop. A while down the road we figured out we probably should’ve planted the cover crop a bit later, I had a crazy time trying to plant straight rows into the thick cover, and it stunted some growth at first. I’ll be the first to admit I didn’t think this would work. Not how we do it, not how it’s been done, and nothing is straight which got to me 🤣🤷🏻‍♀️

Later on, we thinned the cover crop around the plants and started seeing some real growth with the hotter days! Now we have acorn squash galore, a bunch of tomatoes on their way, and melons, beans, and other things randomly growing everywhere! I can see how this is preventing diseases we normally would be struggling with by now, and I can see all the insects and life loving this way of gardening.

So, if you drive by, this garden looks like a mess. Somehow it’s thriving🤷🏻‍♀️ imagine that, the farmer knows best again with the plants 🤣😉❤️

Next year we’ll make a few adjustments, plant cover on ground we aren’t using and prep it for the next season, and plant the cover later, but this is a fun expieriment. Best part of all? We have like no w**ds in here. It’s all beautiful cover crop beneficial to the land. Our vines look strong and healthy and our tomatoes are a beautiful green with thick bushes. And we have volunteer plants everywhere! That means it’s things for last year growing, if you’re unfamiliar with the term, because I was. 😂

Here’s to trying new things at Vollmar Organics!

Welcome welcome to Vollmar Organics!!

Hey everyone, we wanted to take a second and say thank you for liking our page and joining us in this journey! We’re getting things organized and rolling and will be posting our farming journey including farm life, gardening stuff, and our chicken adventures!

A bit about us, Jordan is a sixth generation farmer looking to replenish the soil and use regenerative farming to help our land. He likes finding ways to add to the soil naturally, and is passionate about farming! He also is interested in looking into gardening to provide for us and sell someday. He is the main chicken feeder and waterer, and the head of the flock. The girls follow him as soon as th he see him outside!

Kristin is the farm wife and homeschooling mom. She loves her chicken babies (that she bought when she was just going to “price out” the chickens) and loves taking care of the farm anyway she can help, which is mainly food transportation and garden planning at the moment 🤣👍🏼

The girls “M & V” are growing up farmers daughter and loving it! We’re all learning as we go, and look forward to sharing more and more with you!

So, friends, say hi, and be ready for more posts soon!
