The art of egg stamping
Eggs are not easy to stamp! They are oval shaped which makes them rather difficult to get a perfect stamp every time. I have gotten better over time but it definitely takes practice! See the photos below to check out a couple perfectly stamped eggs!

Comb shape Is that a rooster? Surprisingly some hens can have large combs too! And different shaped combs exist.

Washed vs. Unwashed eggs

Unwashed eggs: last longer because they have a layer or bloom on the outside of the shell that closes the pores and keeps bacteria out. Unwashed eggs can be kept unregistered for 2 weeks and will last anywhere from 3 to 6 months in the refrigerator after that.

Washed eggs: when washed this removes the bloom (protective layer) and then these eggs must be refrigerated immediately and only keep for about 3 months.

So apparently broodyness is contagious lol 😂 we have 3 broody hens that want to sit and hatch eggs. We do not have a rooster so there is no point in them trying because during this hormonal phase they can lose weight, lose feathers, and it just isn’t healthy for them. They also stop laying during this time. So to break the cycle I have all 3 of them in “chicken jail” which basically means they are in isolation in a pen by themselves away from the nesting boxes. They have food and water available to them. This is only for 2 days and then they can go back to join the rest of the flock. If they continue to be broody then they go back into isolation. We will see how they do. They are free from jail tonight when I get home from work. Fingers crossed!
