There's the good in farming, then there's the bad. Most people only talk about the good stuff, because no one wants to relive the bad. I'm going to be honest, and share the bad in my day today.
I've recently heard the phrase "there's livestock, and there's deadstock in farming". We've had a few losses over the years. Always heart breaking. Never the outcome you'd expect. Nevertheless, there's surely livestock, as well as deadstock.
This morning I went to the barn to check the cows. Unfortunately, one of my heifer cows was having trouble birthing her calf. This was a big calf coming out of a smaller mama. She was not able to push him out. It took all the strength we had to pull him out. The calf did not make it out alive.
Mama diligently lay there cleaning and mooing at it, trying to stimulate life. She broke my heart. We left the calf with her for the morning so she could process the loss.
We were afraid she also might have some issues after the birthing process as she didn't want to get up. Great. Total loss. But, Once we took the calf from her this afternoon, she became unsettled and finally stood up. Thank God. 🙏🏻
This has never happened on our farm. A first for us. It was so heartbreaking. I pray it never happens again.
But as the saying goes, there's livestock, and there's deadstock. Take the good with the bad. And I will always strive to remember the good days.
Rest easy, little calf. ❤️🩹
