Onions are ready to harvest when most of the necks and tops have fallen over. Once this happens, the onions will not get any larger and should be pulled and allowed to dry in a shaded area with good air circulation. After the outer skin becomes dry and crispy, they can be stored in mesh bags in a cool, dry location. This should only take a few days if the weather is warm and dry.

Words of wisdom that every gardener eventually learns. Mother Nature is the boss.

Words of wisdom that every gardener eventually learns. Mother Nature is the boss.

I get asked all the time, “Why aren’t my onions bulbing?” or “Why can’t I grow big onions?”

Sometimes… it’s not you.

These two onions have been growing side by side for five and a half months. Same seed start in September. Same variety. Same soil, same water, same care.

And yet - completely different results.

That’s just nature doing what nature does.

I truly believe we shouldn’t take full credit for the best of our harvest, and we shouldn’t beat ourselves up over the worst either. There are so many variables outside of our control.

The real goal is simple - enjoy the process, stay consistent, and be a good steward of the land.
