Grow Your Own Horseradish at Home

The price of horseradish has climbed significantly in recent years, especially the processed varieties sold in jars. But that doesn’t mean you have to cross this bold, spicy root off your list. In fact, horseradish is surprisingly easy to grow at home, whether you have a garden or just a balcony.

This hardy plant develops a long, vigorous root system, so it thrives best in loose, nutrient-rich soil that allows it to grow deep. It prefers a sunny to partially shaded spot and is known for its resilience. Impressively, even a small piece of root can sprout into a new plant, making propagation simple and cost-effective.

If you’re planting horseradish in a container, choose a deep pot to give the roots enough space to develop properly. Growing your own offers more than just savings. Freshly harvested horseradish delivers a much stronger, more vibrant flavor than store-bought versions, and you can grate only what you need. That means less waste and full control over the intensity of its signature heat.
