🇵🇭 Filipino American History Month
For us, Filipino American history isn’t just something we read about. It’s part of our family’s story.
On October 18, 1997, our family officially arrived in the United States. Our Tatay, a U.S. veteran, filed the petition that helped bring our family here. We first settled in South Lake Tahoe, eventually making our way to Sparks, Nevada, where our family bought a home that is still in our family today.
And October 18 carries an even deeper connection. Exactly 410 years before our family arrived, on October 18, 1587, the first recorded Filipinos in the continental United States came ashore at what is now Morro Bay, California. That date is one of the reasons October is recognized as Filipino American History Month.
From the Philippines → California → Tahoe → Reno/Sparks, our family’s story is one of many that make up the Filipino American experience.
This month, we celebrate where we came from, the generations who made the journey, and the home we’ve built here. 🇵🇭🇺🇸
