Sunday farm life, featuring a failed attempt at a nice group photo.

Tonya was trying to snap a cute picture of the new kids, and wouldn’t you know it, LIL MISCHIEF MANAGED (aka Mischief) decided this was her moment. Not a shared moment. Not a group moment. Her moment.

The others showed up for a sweet Sunday picture. Mischief showed up and pretty much said, "Not in my house". Typical.

Around here, there is always one goat who believes the camera was invented specifically for them. Today, that goat is Mischief.

GOAT GOLD AND WEIRDNESS WEDNESDAY

Today’s picture is the herd in black and white. We thought we’d post this one because it reminded us of an old-school country album cover. A 33, of course. The kind you’d find in a dusty crate somewhere with a title like, “We Refuse to Leave the Porch” or “Maggie Pooped on the Sun Deck. Again.”. There’s drama. There’s attitude. There are at least three goats looking like they left the band over creative differences.

GOAT GOLD:

Goats are highly social animals, and herd life is full of quiet communication. They use posture, eye contact, head position, vocal sounds, and personal space to sort out who is in charge, who is annoyed, who is being pushy, and who is pretending they had absolutely nothing to do with whatever just happened. Basically, goats can hold an entire committee meeting without saying a word. Which, frankly, is more than we can say for most committee meetings.

WEIRDNESS:

Crows can remember human faces and hold grudges for years.

Researchers have found that crows can recognize individual people, remember who bothered them and even warn other crows about that person. So somewhere out there, a crow has an enemy list. No notebook, no spreadsheet. Just pure bird rage and excellent facial recognition. That is simultaneously impressive and deeply unsettling.

So in summary:

- Goats communicate through looks, posture, and quiet herd politics.
- Crows remember faces and apparently maintain personal vendettas.
- And this photo still looks like the debut album from a band that broke up halfway through recording the B side.

GOAT GOLD AND WEIRDNESS WEDNESDAY

Today’s picture is Coco.

Coco is wearing a tutu because Tonya has apparently decided that plain, unadorned goats are no longer enough. We have now entered the costuming era, and frankly, there may be no going back. Coco seems to be taking it in stride, though. She looks a little like a tiny rural ballerina who just found out the production budget was three dollars and a dream. But she is committed and we have to respect that.

GOAT GOLD:

Goats wag their tails when they’re happy or excited. If you bring a bottle, a snack, or literally anything they approve of, that little tail starts going like a windshield wiper in a nasty thunderstorm. It is one of the clearest signs that a goat is delighted with the current state of affairs. So while humans smile and dogs wag, goats basically throw a tiny rear-end celebration.

WEIRDNESS:

Decorator crabs make outfits out of whatever they find on the ocean floor. Seaweed. Sponge. Coral. Random debris. Occasionally bits of things that used to be alive. They stick it all to themselves for camouflage, which means somewhere under the sea, there is a crab walking around in a handcrafted algae ensemble thinking, “Yea, this is definitely the look.”

So yes, Coco is wearing a tutu. But at least she is not accessorizing with sea garbage and the remains of her enemies. That really puts things in perspective.

Coco’s take:

“If the crab gets a whole wardrobe, I don’t want to hear one word about this tutu.”

So in summary:

- Goats wag their tails when they’re happy.
- Crabs accessorize with ocean debris and the remains of their enemies.
- And Coco is one tiny tiara away from taking this thing professionally.

GOAT GOLD AND WEIRDNESS WEDNESDAY

Today’s picture is LU3, who has recently been moved to the kid barn. As you can see, he is handling the transition with grace, maturity, and a face that says, “I want my union rep.”

The kid barn is where the younger goats start learning how to be goats together. They figure out routines, pecking order, who sleeps where, who yells first and which human is most likely to cave under emotional pressure. LU3 appears to be actively exploring that last one.

GOAT GOLD:

Young goats are very social animals, and moves like this help them build confidence and independence. They learn from each other quickly. Where to eat. Where to sleep. Who is dramatic. Who is bossy. Also, who is pretending not to be bossy but absolutely is.

Basically, the kid barn is daycare. Except with hooves and slightly worse table manners.

WEIRDNESS:

Some plants can “hear” themselves being eaten. Not hear like ears, obviously. That would be an insane claim. Probably.

But studies have shown some plants respond to the vibration of caterpillars chewing on their leaves by producing more defensive chemicals.

So somewhere out there, a plant is quietly sitting in the sun, minding its own business, when it feels chewing and thinks, “Absolutely not.”

Nature gave plants a security system, but just made it incredibly slow and passive aggressive.

LU3’s take:

“I understand the plant. I too have been disturbed against my will.”

GOAT GOLD AND WEIRDNESS WEDNESDAY

Today’s picture is Mischief. Mischief appears surprised because she has been caught in a private moment.

Why are we posting a picture of a baby goat p*eing? Because farm life is weird, the picture is funny and she looks like she just realized this may go viral for all the wrong reasons.

GOAT GOLD:

With newborn and young kids, the simple stuff matters. Eating well, bouncing around, staying warm, and yes, p*eing normally, are all good signs that things are working like they should. It may not be glamorous, but healthy baby goats do a lot of very ordinary things. Usually while looking adorable and sometimes while making direct eye contact.

WEIRDNESS:

Lobsters p*e from openings near their faces. That's probably already enough information for this post but, unfortunately, there is more.

Lobsters also use p*e to communicate. They can release it toward other lobsters to send chemical messages about territory, dominance, and mating. So somewhere in the ocean, two lobsters are having a serious conversation by spraying face p*e at each other.

“Back off.”
“This is my rock.”
“Are you single?”

All delivered through the same system.

That is a lot of love languages being thrown around simply by going number 1. So while Mischief may have been caught in an awkward moment, at least she isn’t using it as a group chat.

Mischief’s take:

“I would like to thank the lobsters for making this about them.”

Sunday sweetness from Tractor Supply.

Baby goats in coats.

These two are twins from MOON STATION Bad Intentions and MOON STATION SS Lily, born 4/27, and they have spent the weekend proving something we already suspected:

People cannot walk past baby goats in tiny coats.

We took them out while running errands and they were adored by just about everyone who saw them. Kids stopped. Adults stopped. Tractor Supply shoppers stopped mid-mission. Nobody was safe and they handled all the attention like seasoned professionals. We even upstaged some Instagram influencer speaking at Home Depot. It was awkward.

Happy Sunday from the farm.

Sometimes the best part of running errands is bringing along two tiny goats who accidentally become local celebrities.

GOAT GOLD AND WEIRDNESS WEDNESDAY

We made it to another Wednesday. More importantly, we made it to the end of kidding season. Lily wrapped things up for us with two girls: Missy and Mischief.

Missy is the white one. She appears to have arrived with a fully developed opinion on management. Mischief seems quieter so far, which is usually how these things start.

We are tired. They are not. Naturally.

GOAT GOLD:

Baby goats start learning almost immediately. Within hours, they begin recognizing voices, smells, routines, and where they fit in the group. They may look like tiny confused lawn ornaments, but their little brains are already working. Mostly on milk. And escape routes.

WEIRDNESS:

Hagfish defend themselves with slime.

When threatened, a hagfish can release slime that rapidly expands in seawater and clogs the gills of whatever tried to eat it. That is not bravery, sp*ed or strength. That is simply making yourself everyone else’s problem.

Honestly, respect.

Missy’s take:

“I totally understand this strategy.”

Mischief’s take:

“I am still reviewing my options.”

This is LU3. We don’t usually name the bucklings, so they get little designations instead.

He may not have a name, but he’s already made himself known around here. He's extremely sweet natured, always nearby, and usually the first one to wander over and see what we’re doing.

This picture pretty well sums him up. Bright eyed, curious, and mid-comment about something he thinks is important.

Funny how the ones without names still end up leaving the biggest impressions.

Happy Sunday from the farm.

GOAT GOLD AND WEIRDNESS WEDNESDAY

We’ve been a little quiet lately. Turns out spring on a farm does not care about our posting schedule.

Today’s feature is Luna, taking a well-earned moment after delivering one baby boy and one baby girl, now gazing out the window like she's just glad everything is done. And out.

GOAT GOLD:
Mother goats recognize their kids by voice incredibly fast. Within hours of birth, a doe can usually pick out her babies by their calls in a crowd. Which means Luna could identify her children in a noisy room faster than most humans can find their own phone.

WEIRDNESS:
There’s a species of jellyfish that can essentially reset its life cycle and become young again after reaching adulthood. It’s one of the closest things in nature to biological “starting over.” Meanwhile, we throw our back out sneezing once and never fully recover.

Luna’s take: “I created two lives this week and still look calmer than everyone else around here.”

Sunday Sweetness from the farm.

This is Big Boris, "BB", as he's known on the streets One week old. 2.5 pounds of pure fury and justice and already looks like he has strong opinions about everything.

He’s also rockin' brand new pajamas, because when you’re this small, staying warm outranks looking dignified, although he seems convinced he still looks very important.

Tiny feet. Big attitude. Absolutely certain he’s in charge.
