North Carolina Urge Your Legislators to Protect Raw Milk Herdshares! Hearing Is May 6!
North Carolina Senate Bill 639, “The North Carolina Farm Act of 2025,” seeks to impact agriculture in the state in a number of ways, some good, others problematic. Review the bill in its entirety to assess how the various proposals might impact you, other area producers, and your communities.
They key section of the bill that we’re addressing in this alert is the potential ban on raw milk distribution, including via herd share arrangements (see page 13 of the bill). Currently, North Carolina law explicitly allows the distribution of raw milk under herd share agreements to consumers who choose this product as the best option for them and their families. This bill seeks to strip that right and make herd shares illegal by banning the distribution of all raw milk for human consumption (raw milk for human feed would still be permitted).
A hearing on this bill will take place at 11 a.m. EST on Tuesday, May 6, 2025 before the Senate Judiciary Committee. Please attend if you can so that your voice can be heard! If you are unable to attend, contact your legislators now to tell them to vote against this measure!
