We are based in downtown Cary, North Carolina. The majority of goods carried by Gather are made by micro artisan / maker entrepreneurs meaning goods made by emerging business owners who hand-craft or manufacture their goods in small quantities. Gather’s owner Michelle is herself a maker entrepreneur who specializes in textiles, and home goods. Michelle’s goal is to elevate the work of these makers so that Gather’s customers appreciate the value of the product they are purchasing and the time and care that went into the making of each piece.

Oh hi! 👋 Here’s on of my favorite pieces in the shop to enhance your home bar. I love the green glass which looks both retro and modern. This gorgeous glass cocktail shaker is perfect to keep on display and is also super functional to whip up your favorite cocktails and mocktails. You just add your syrup, your ice, your liquor, your soda water, whatever other additions go in the drink and vigorously shake for 15-30 seconds and then strain it into your glass of choice.

Here’s a little bit of what I’ve been working on these past few days: I’m always at the shop at odd hours pulling products figuring out what I need to re-order, moving things around, creating to-do lists. I’ve also been working on some art file edits that keep having some problems for a new product. I’ve been packaging up cards for wholesale orders, I’m always texting with employees at the shop answering questions. I’ve been batch processing for the next few months and finalizing class details, which is a multi step process and takes many many days, but saves me lots of time in the long run. I’m also changing up some of our behind-the-scenes processes which take up a lot of bandwidth for me and my husband and delegating some of those and figuring out what that looks like. I’d like to get my little tiny unheated and uncooled laundry room office looking more lovely and tidied up, but that’s going to have to wait a bit because other things are at the front of the line. I’ve been moving my sprinkler around every half an hour at home so my newly planted plants don’t die in the heat. And as I’ve said before, I’m just generally feeling a little unmoored and out of sorts (and a lot of it is just recalibrating from other people’s energies and emotions and transitioning from summer into fall and a new schedule). But also it is true that a couple times a year at least I do go through a burnout phase and that’s just something that is part of my normal. I don’t love it, but it’s a good time to practice re-regulating even if I can’t fully control the things that are causing me to be dysregulated. It can be a lot to manage that plus a busy business. I love what I do, and regardless of what I do professionally or otherwise these things would still be a recurring constant in my life, so knowing that, I’m giving myself grace, making soup (despite the heat), taking things slow slowly and just letting it exist as it is and not trying to push through it, instead just feeling it, acknowledging it and pausing and breathing while it rolls on through. How’s your August been going?

Are you feeling a little crazy and hectic in this space between two things? Everyone I’ve talked to is here right now, including me. If you’re a parent, who has kids who are home for the summer and your schedule had to change to accommodate them and now you have more availability and time for yourself, you probably had all these ambitious plans about how you would put your head down and get to work, but your body still wants a break now that you have more alone and personal time. This is just a I see you. I hear you. I feel you. I’m in the same boat sort of place and just a reminder to ease into things. It’s OK for things to not be perfectly figured out and I bet you they will align soon. ;)

Gather Goods Co is a gift shop based in downtown Cary that has a special love for emerging makers (though we carry gifts from all over). You’ll find products from over 25 North Carolina makers on our shop shelves and the work of hundreds of other emerging makers. I’m a product designer myself and my business started with The Rock & Shop Market, a juried 100 vendor makers market from 2004-2014 before I segued into what I do now. In addition to the gift shop we are also a coworking space and classroom as well as an online shop. We’re open every Tuesday-Sunday 11am-5pm and hope to see you soon!

I’ve been working today on a photo shoot with my mahjong mats and carefully having to edit out my feet that pop up when I’m standing on a table to get the right shot. ;) These mats were designed to coordinate with a variety of tiles and racks, and whether you like neutrals or a little bit of a bold and bright color palette you can bring all of those elements in with different colored racks and tiles, tablecloths and glassware for a pretty mahjong tablescape - or you can just grab what you have and some friends and just play, no extra fuss involved.
