UPCOMING WORKSHOP MAY 7th

Through our Grass-Fed Beef Partnership, a long standing partnership with Roanoke County Economic Development, we are excited to announce our next grazing workshop.

Understanding Nutrition in Pasture-Based Livestock Systems: Forage Quality, Supplementation, and Animal Performance

This full-day event brings together farmers, researchers, and extension agents for an in-depth look at nutrition in grass-fed pasture-based livestock systems. We're thrilled to feature two outstanding speakers:

Joel Salatin - Farmer, author, and co-owner of Polyface Farm in Swoope, Virginia

Dr. Matt Poore - Professor and extension specialist in ruminant nutrition at NC State University

Together, we'll explore questions like:
• How do forage and hay nutritional profiles change over time and across environmental conditions?
• What are the most common nutritional gaps in grass-fed systems, and how do we address them?
• What are best practices for mineral supplementation?
• How can stocking density and adaptive rotations optimize available nutrition?
• What emerging research and on-farm innovations are reshaping our understanding of ruminant nutrition?

We’re excited to partner with EO to bring students hands‑on STEM experiences led by Virginia Tech faculty—showing how science, math, and technology power the future of agriculture.

✨ Sneak Peek — Running a Farm with Numbers: How Math Helps Farmers Make Smart Choices

In this data‑powered session led by Anne Brown, Associate Professor in Research & Informatics; Professor of Practice; and Data Science Faculty Fellow in the Department of Biochemistry, students will step into the shoes of real farm decision‑makers.

Using real‑world farm data, they’ll collect and analyze numbers, read charts and graphs, and explore how math connects to plant growth, soil health, weather, and environmental choices. It’s an engaging, hands‑on way to discover just how essential data is to modern farming!

💚 A huge thank‑you to Farm Credit for their generous sponsorship and continued support of youth STEM education!
