The beginning of the end...

The weather has shifted. The shadows are shifting, the nights are cooler and the katydids are beginning to sing. It's the beginning of the end.

In the market garden we're preparing for the end too. A lot of beds are empty.

We plan to stop coming to market at the end of October.

We've done this before, but this time feels different. Because it is.

This time, we don't plan to restart next spring.

Over the years as we've grown vegetables for you, it's been really good. Over and over we've talked about the many wonderful relationships we've been able to have, the gifts that you've given us and the fun our children have had all because of market. You all have been incredibly supportive and we are so, so grateful.

At the same time, the rigors of growing food have been catching up to us. Picking lettuce for a meal is no big deal. But picking lettuce for 187 meals is hard on the back.

And keeping 60 some different crops growing and harvested at the right times can be pretty mentally stressful too.

We're realizing this isn't for us over the next season of our lives.

We've also come to the realization that there are other things we care about and would like to pursue.

Growing food for other people is wonderful but even more wonderful (to us) is teaching other people to grow their own food. Laverne's Substack "Your Garden Coach" and his garden consulting makes that a reality.

Growing annuals is good, but growing perennials, trees and shrubs makes my (Julie's) heart even happier. The tree nursery comes out of that.

We also love to see people thrive and grow and pursue God and Laverne's life coaching business as well as the church we're leading come out of that.

So we are letting go of the market garden.

It's hard and sad in some ways. It would be even harder if there weren't so many other great organic/naturally grown produce stands at market. You are in good hands.

It also helps that we may be back at market next spring with trees and perennials, so maybe you can stop by and say hi, even if we aren't selling vegetables.

We're excited about the next season for our family and about where God's taking us!
